So, as the proud owner of an 18 month old $600 brick, it is now clear that you can, in fact, brick a PS3 by shutting off the power during a firmware update (shuts off after 15 seconds).
I'm sure we're going to see more and more of these as the systems age. I'm disappointed that with all of the technical wiards out there, so far the only advice is "return it to Sony" (with $150).
there's gotta be a way to reflash the @#$#@@% thing.
No offence but that's a big duh for ANY system hacked or not, there is a reason why there are warnings everywhere. And no there is no other advice besides sending it back to Sony; there is no way to reflash the PS3 right now or else we would have custom firmwares.

It does suck though. I always fear that during a firmware upgrade, the power is gonna cut out in my house.
same here, i keep telling myself maybe i should get one of those back up power supplies. called UPS?? or something like that just in case.. i cross my fingers everytime i have to update..
ye o totally understand how you feel. I had an update and i was worrying bout what would happen if i accidently hit the power, or my little sis played with the socket buttons. Then the firmware finished and i was relieved and the my dad came in switched the plug and told me to do my homework. I was cacking myself thinking what would of happened if he did that while it was updating
