Somewhere in the revision history of NV “Make DVD Video”, it became buggy. I don’t know at what point that happened. I have the latest version: 4.9.7.6 (Nero-7.10.1.2_all_update.exe). My computer is an AMD Athlon 64, 2.2 ghz with 1 gig of RAM.

A new file will start out ok, but as the menu list grows NV starts becoming buggy and increasingly frustrating to use. At some point, functions such as “Add: Original Pictures” become impossible to use without causing computer lockup. The only reliable way to use NV is to do a “save” after every entry or change, or risk losing work. At times it becomes so bad that no work can be accomplished and I quit in frustration. A few days or weeks later it will work well enough to proceed. It doesn’t seem to be related to rebooting, however, as I have tried this many times.

The bugs happen at random. The most common one is for the program to simply shut down without warning. Sometimes it can be restarted right away, but other times it takes several tries. The other bug is for it to lock up the computer requiring a shutdown by Task Manager.

I have had contact with Nero tech support several times, including sending them error log files and system configuration files, but the response is always the same-----“reload the program”. Reloading the program is not a simple task. Add/Remove Programs only removes part of it. The rest must be performed by deleting or renaming files—some in the registry—and in Safe Mode. I have gone to the trouble to do this several times, but it accomplishes nothing

I would be willing to throw money at the problem and upgrade to Nero 8 or whatever the latest is, but I have no assurances that the problem would be solved and I am against, in principle, the idea of paying for something that should work in the first place.

I really like the NV DVD video program where several, menued, slide or video shows can be placed on the same disk to be viewed either on the computer or TV. As far as I know, no other software will do this, and I am stuck with living with the problem.

Has anyone out there had any similar experiences? Have you been able to solve them? I will send a copy of this letter to Nero tech support, but I am sure the answer will be the same—“reload the program”.
