Hi - first time poster to these forums so please forgive me if I haven't quite followed protocol - have read the rules etc however so here goes...

I have recently purchased a laptop and for the last few months have happily been able to burn audio cds, dvds etc without any drama.

Last week, I all of a sudden started having troubles. The typical pattern is that regardless of what I try to burn the progress bar gets to about 7% and then will simply hang until an error message comes out saying that the burn process has failed.

I haven't changed the media I have been using. HAve checked the DMA settings and they are set to DMA (not PIO). Have installed the ASPI layer as read on these forums and nothing has seemingly helped. Have also uninstalled Nero (and used Nero clean tools.

could try firmware update, do you have plenty of hard drive space left?

If your discs were DVDs and they code as CMC mag I would totally agree with Rotary but I have recently found that my Verbatim CDs are in fact made by CMC mags and to date after around 300 burns I have not experienced any problems...I was totally amazed to say the least.

I cant see too much wrong with the log though...maybe kick the speed up to 32X

Thanks for the tips to date - will try tonight and post how I went.

The CDR's in question are Verbatim as mentioned - has done it with whatever media I've thrown at it though, both CDr & DVD.

Regarding bumping the speed up to 32x - 24x is the max it will let me choose - maybe this is another peice of the puzzle?

Will try the registry change later, and as mentioned, will post the results.

had any pc crashes lately?

Okay, have installed an ASPI layer. ASPI check says its installed and fully operational. I havent used the forceaspi.

Have also changed the registry setting as suggested (do I need to restart for this to take effect?).

Haven't had any PC crashes that I can recall - certainly nothing major.

Have tried to burn another CD - but still the same problem. New log file attached.

You need to restart your computer for any registry changes to take affect and just my opinion don’t use Nero for audio cd’s more trouble then its worth I use acoustical mp3 burner you can download a 30 day trial might be worth a try

The problem occurs when burning anything. The logs I have posted are burning MP3's that I have ripped using CDex. TGhe same problem occurs when trying to burn video as well.

The drive itself came with the laptop - its been in there from day one and had been working fine up until a while back. It reads everything okay by the way.

Tried to burn again at 6x but didnt have a 6x option - went with 4x and same problem - hit the 7% mark then nothing...

oh and forceASPI too.

Have you tried any other software besides Nero? If yes and it still fails looks like your writer is Fu@@ed as far as I’m aware the writer has two lasers one for reading and one or writing that’s why it reads but cant write it cant align the laser to burn might be wrong it has been known to happen

Okay - tried ForceASPI - no luck. Have tried to burn something with Windows Media Player - no luck. I guess I try and open the laptop to see if the cables are attached.

i would pop to shops and buy a different cdr and try again...

as could be bad batch of cdrs, i have seen a 50 pack with say 10 no good. as you say you changed nothing to pc.

is your laptop an Acer? if yea which one is it?

Well picked - yes its an Acer. Acer Aspire 1652WLMi

I’m sure there is an updated firmware for your burner on the Acer website might be worth a double check before you do anything else like Rotary said trying a different batch or brand of disk may be worth a shot as well I had some verbatim cdrs a wile back burned 10 the other 15 all failed got some more all burned ok must have been a bad batch

Will get some other disks and see what happens. Have had the same issue when burning a dvd but that may have been a once off so will try some more DVDs as well.

Haven't come across any updated firmware however.

Just been reading a review on your laptop and it has only a ide primary channel connection so the hard drive and your dvdrw are on the same ribbon cable if that’s the case might be worth a shot at a bit of pc maintenance run spybot search and destroy and ad aware personal check for spyware then run ccleaner to tune up the registry any unused programs uninstall them after all that and your happy defrag your hardrive you can download all the above off Afterdawn worth a try :)
