Anyone got any ideas on the meaning of this error from DVD Shrink.
It came up as a 1/0 device error.

Here's the story. I just got through removing the two DVD drives from my computer and placing them on the counter above . I did this by purchasing a 24" extension ( male to female 40 pin connector ribbon cable) I then built a 24" extension for the 4 pin power cable that feeds the two drives. Drive "D" the pioneer DVD burner no longer works properly. However drive "E" seems to be find . E is a LG reader only. It doesn't burn DVDs just CDs. I made a test on the new set-up and places a older movie that I knew I could back -up. The movie was the Hospital (George C Scott) I backed this up two days ago successfully.
When I place a DVD in Drive "D" and start to go through shrink, I get a error that says "couldn't perform because of a 1/0 device error. I also can not just play the disc on the computer either. Obviously this is not just a shrink problem.
One last thing, There was a 3 or 4 pin connector that went from the mother board to drive "D" ( one that doesn't work) that I did not connect . Someone told me this was only for the headphone plug on the front of the drive. I now see that I have no headphone plug on these drives. So maybe this is a no brainier. Perhaps this connector should have been extended like the others, I don't know.
If there is anyone knowledgeable in this area that can help get be back up and running again I would certainly appreciate your help.

Most likely with the 40.
You probably should be using an 80 but in either case, the drive is not supplying the much needed information to the program.

I'm leaning towards the idea that the 40 conductor ribbon cable just isn't doing the job.
As you stated in your last reply to me. I took the cable out and checked it with my meter. It checked out ok. I am thinking there is a capacitance issue with the 40. My understanding is that the 80 conductor is used for this reason.
You've demonstrated that you have some knowledge in this area. In your option, if I were able to acquire a 24" extension in a 80 conductor ribbon cable, do you think this would solve my problem? Or is the whole idea of adding 2' to this ribbon cable a lost cause?

Just so you know, I already purchased 2 Pioneer external drives in the cases , fed with a USB cable, the problem is I don't like them for several reasons. It's for that reason that I'm trying to take this other route.

Try getting your hands on an 80.
You stated that these drives are sitting on a counter. Are these drives properly grounded?

No I did not ground them. I thought the connectors that are plugged into them would take care of that. When they are mounted in the PC they are suspended with two green plastic rails in the slot. I didn't think they would be grounded from the case.
Do you think I should have installed a external ground wire to them?

That link you sent was very helpful and full of lots on good information, too bad it's so cluttered up with so much advertisements. I noticed they mentioned that the length of the ribbon cable should not be more then 18". That's making me think I should forget this whole idea and go with the 2 external drives, I already purchased.
I will be talking with a tech at 2pm today about using a 80 wire cable. We'll see if he thinks it will work or not.

Having your drives outside the box, I would go with a better groung than that tiny piece of wire inside the ribbon. You Also have an extension on your power supply. I feel they should be back in the box with the shortest wiring possible. And if you're looking for that Ultra DMA mode above mode 2, You must have the 80-conductor cable.
