Yes, you need one. It's $12 shipped form newegg. $12 Just look in sofa cracks and under your bed and probably find more than $12.
If you can't afford $12 card how are you going to be able to afford DL DVDs once you flash your drive?

cl, dont get him confused about the onboard sata. Unless he knows his way around computers, it will be a long process for him. I got a nice sata card for my 360, it cost all and all $10. Shipped in about a week and a half.
Here I even found one for you. Its the exact same one i got and it worked perfect for my hitachi 78.

I have nforce4 onboard sata chipset and it it works fine. VIA pci card IS NOT NEEDED!!! But, if you have no sata onboard..then yes..it's needed.
I find it funny that EVERYBODY says, regardless if you have onboard sata, that the via6421 is needed.
Flashed many of ms25/ms28 drives with my nforce4 onboard with dosflash16.
I guess I have done the impossible from what I have read. :/

That's the problem...you all want the easy way...don't care to LEARN.
Well screw it then.
YOU ALL NEED A VIA6421 SATA CARD FOR EVERYTHING.
IT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO. Because actually trying to figure something out is so old school.
LAME.

its ok i got the via vt6421a card from amazon for £10.80
and to the guy complaining that we like to do things the easy way, yes of course. its like saying to a bricklayer "why did u hold those bricks together with cement, i have some pretty good super glue in the house" if there is an easy option the majority of people are going to take it.

Dude, your analogy made no sense. but...
Whatever. If you already have the equipment, do you trust everybody on the net to be right? or do you check for yourself that they might be wrong?
Oh nevermind, I already know. the internets R kewl.
Don't worry, the via6421 card solves all. Until you run into problems and post on forums, then realize, with a bit of work, you could have done it with your existing equipment.
For a bunch of cheap mothers...I'd figure you would all like to learn how to do it with what you have.
You are a hard bunch to figure out.

I agree to a point.
But, why not exhaust all possibilities before buying the via card. Heck, some you might learn something along the way.
Anyway, it doesn't matter. I've always been one to try to figure things out with what I have on hand.
To date, my nforce4 onboard has flashed all the drives with out issues. Partly because I took the time to figure it out when others said it wouldn't work. ;)

it does not bother me having to buy a via card, i got paid not long ago and they are not that expensive. i dont try to use the onboard sata as it didn't seem time efficient trying to figure it out when i could have it flashed in minutes by spending a few £. but either way its all down to personal prefferance no point in every1 debaiting over whats "better" do it how you like to end of. and yes by the way i do trust people on the forums. if i didnt. i wouldnt ask.
damn i hate typing this much lol

wow.....all i did was recomend getting a sata card and *poof*. This thread turns into an argument. Well, whatever...and by the way, CL, you assume that everyone here wants to do everything the easy way...well in that case, why are ourselves trying to flash our own drive.
Any way, post and tell us how it went.

I'd rather spend $12 and be safe then brick my xbox. I had sata on my mobo 2 years ago, I didn't even bother checking it, just bought a VIA card right away. We have different philosophies, mine is no BS minimize all errors. ie, VIA card, Pioneer drive, CloneCD, Verb DLs.
Not, a mobo that i think will work, some drive came with my PC, and dynex DLs.... If that combo doesn't work do rubber band mod, if that doesn't work mess with plot, by the time your out of ideas your xbox is shot while the original problem was probably bad media!
