ps2 not reading game discs.

hi i was wondering that my ps2 is 4 years old now and for about 6 months its not playing any backed up games or the original games. But it still plays audio discs. any ideas how can i fix it. as soon as i put in a game discs it says please insert a playstation 2 format disc. But sometimes it plays them too. its random. any help.

when my ps2 does weird stuff like that such as the dreaded DISC READ ERROR or PS1/2 format disc i do this!
1.i place one of my backups and wait for the please enter PS1/2 format screen
2.while its on the screen just turn off ur ps2
3.using a slide key or flip top and switch the disc with a working ps2 disc
4. the game should boot

My theory: this resets the laser completely and then the ps2 adjusts the laser as if it were new again.

My PS2: is like 4 years old to and didnt work but then one day i was fiddling with it and this came to birth
