How do i hardcode subs

Hello, im a total noob to subbing so i need a lil help.
I have the video and i have the subs in .srt format. How exactly do i hardcode the sub with the video?

my subs are turning yellow. Is there a way i can turn them back to white?

also, how do i make certain lines italicized?

 

I don't think you can change an individual line using that filter.
You can do it using the VOBSub filter in VirtualDub.

Install VOBSub, taking care to explicitly select support for VirtualDub

Run SubtitleCreator
Open the .srt file.
Select the lines to be italicized.(the 'i' icon to the lower/right of the window)
Save the File as 'VOBSub' - there will be .sub and an .idx file saved.

Run VirtualDub
Load the movie.
Select the VOBSub filter.
On the filter window, select the .idx file

I followed the advice in that link on top of the thread and basically it works but:

The files get compressed which obviously lowers the quality. So the question is, how can I just create hardsubs without compressing the avi-file?

 

If you have a standalone player that accepts DivX/XviD, use AVIAddXSubs.
Place the AVI and .SRT in the same folder.
A new video file is created in a few seconds.
Note that it adds .divx to the end of the new file name.
Some players won't accept this extension, so rename the file as 'something.avi' - the new file should play in a standalone DivX player with the subs controlled from the remote.

Doing it this way, means no encoding - which means no loss of quality.
Note that these subtitles are not playable on a PC - only a standalone unit.

If they are Microdvd .sub format (if the file can be examined in Notepad it's a text based format) then they can be converted with 'Subtool'.

If they are VOBsubs (comprised of a .sub file and an .idx file - they are binary files) then they have to be run through an OCR program to convert.

VOBSub comes with a feature called 'Subresync' which can do this.

Actually I have one more question, if you dont mind...

When I do the hardsubtitling with a film in scope, the subtitles apear at the bottom of the image and not at the bottom of the frame. Considering that with scope there is a lot of black space at the bottom (dont know the english term for that....) it would be nice to have the subtitles not in the image but in that black space. Does the program you suggested has a function to do that?

If you are referring to Subtitler and VirtualDub - the subs are placed at the bottom of the frame.
If the frame includes a black border, that's where the subs will be.

 

I used the program you suggested: AVIAddXSubs and with that the subtitles were in the image and not at the botto of the frame...Considering that it is a rather simple, little programm (even though it works perfectly) there might not be an option to change that?

 

There's a 'Configuration' tab that allows changes in position.
I don't know if it works;you would have to run some tests to find out the optimum settings.

These subs are not hardcoded - inasmuch as they are controlled by the remote.
They are 'DivX' subs and there is more than one program that will create them;one of them might offer a real preview.
