I noticed that some people don’t know how to use UMDGEN. So, I decided to make a guide about this. I wish this helps people in Afterdawn.

What is UMDGEN?
UMDGEN is a tool to create ISO games. I found it very useful, and I wish you will too. UMDGEN can also rebuild ISO. So, if u made a backup or downloaded a game and it gives you a folder named PSP_GAME and UMD_DATA.BIN. Then u need to rebuild ur ISO.

Requirements
Windows OS (Works for Vista)
UMDGEN

How to Rebuild an ISO - Do this if you have a PSP_Game folder and a Bin file
1. Open up UMDGEN and click the New button
2. Go to the big blank space and click the right mouse button. Then go to add and “Existing Folder” and then “Existing File”. Add the PSP_Game folder and the Bin file. Title is optional.
3. After that is done. Click the Save button to either ISO,CSO, or DAX.

Here is a IMAGE

How to Extract an ISO
1. Open ur game image and click Extract Image. Select the Output and it will extract it for you.

How to Applying Patches on ISO
1. Download a PPF patch for the PSP game which are usually translators for the game. Click the “Apply PPF” and browse for your PPF and click OK
2. Once after that is done, click save and save in a format.

Deleting Dummy Files (What are Dummy Files)

INTRO : Dummy Files are large file(s) that added to an image. It allows the disc (UMD) to be read easier, because it pushes all the other data towards the outer edge of the disc. So, now here is the question. Do you need dummy files? No, u don’t, since it’s a ISO on the memory stick, not on UMD.

1. Open your game with UMDGEN. If u have a CSO, skip this step and go to step 2. If it is an ISO then click the “Dummy Search” button. Let it scan. Then it would tell you which dummies are resized.
2. If UMDGEN didn’t work the way you wanted. Look for a BIN file that takes a lot of memory. Delete that and try the game. Make sure to keep a backup. To delete updates on the game (not needed) go to PSP_GAME, SYSDIR, UPDATE. Delete the three files in there. Done

How to Use Ripkits

Ripkits are apps that makes your game smaller. Here is a good website for ripkits. SITE.

To install read the readme.txt in the archieve. Ripkits are all different.

How to Relink Files

When you are trying to delete files such as movies, music ...etc. Your game can be messed up and crash while playing. Ask yourself this question "Will the game attempt to access this file at any point during gameplay?". If the answer is no, then it is okay to delete the files. Things that you can delete are the Dummy Files, Updates and Other Languages Files and folders. To make your game smaller and delete uneeded files, u need to use the relink. Relink is like a forwarding one file to an another file.

1. Now I have exactly no clue, what game you have and what game you are trying. But, here is the general steps. Find a file ( usually a movie or music) that needs relinking and the file that is goin to be relinked.

2. Right click the file you want to use as the relinked file (this is the file you want to keep - all other relinked files will point to this)

3. From the pop-up menu choose - File Relinker -> Use Selected File As Source.

4. Now to relink all the unwanted files to the source file. Select a file you want to be relinked (you can select more than one file if desired) and right-click. From the pop-up menu choose - File Relinker -> Relink To.. (the source file path will be here) Now the selected files are relinked to the source file and should be coloured blue. The iso size should have also decreased.

Using the Batch Converter,

The Batch converter is a tool to convert your game to another type. Such as ISO, CSO, and DAX. It is much faster than just opening it up and converting,

1. Open UMDGEN 4 and click the Batch Converter Tool

2. Drag the game you want to convert into the chart thingy

3. Click "Start Batch Conversion"

LBA Checks Thx to svtstang

LBA checks are pretty much hit and miss, I mean that in the sense you don't know if you need to keep file structure intact until you rebuild an iso only to find it will not boot. Keeping lba integrity is very easy, here is how you do it using umdgen.

1.Before screwing with an iso, even something as small as resizing dummy data, go to file list - export. This will create a simple text file detailing proper file location.

2.Edit the iso as you will. Doesn't matter what you do, whether relinking pmf's or simply removing dummy/redundant data, all will be good because you are keeping lba integrity.

3.When you are done editing, go to flile list - import. It will ask if you wish to force the positioning ( I forget the exact wording, been a while). Answer yes, then save the iso (or cso).

There ya are, now you have a rebuilt iso that keeps the lba integrity of an untouched iso. I say do it to all iso's, worst case scenario you wasted an extra minute of your life, best case you dont have to redo the changes do to an lba check being in place.

Not a sticky worthy guide, but great info for people new to the application non the less. A detailed update on relinking as well as lba checks could indeed make it sticky worthy post though. I made a guide about that awhile ago for another site but can't be bothered to find it ^.^

Nice job, look forward to updates.

All Finished. If ppl dont get this, plz tell me. Will post pic in request.

As I am a newbee to PSP i want to know more..

1- While i was draged one MP3 file & and a video file i downloaded from youtube draged to my memory stick, while i was tried to open, it shows a message that no data on the memory stick. How i could play any audio/vedio file from memory stick? Is this need to format memory stick before use?

2- I am purchased a new psp (model PSP 2004PB). Is there any thing i have to do in the settings before doing the above explained steps? I dont know what is firmware, pandora battery etc. Is i need to change the existing software on this?

Thanks & regards,..

1. So ... you just want to play MP3 files on the PSP? Just drag that into the Music folder. Videos need to be converted to mp4, then are transfer to the VIDEO folder. Reformat your Memory Stick via PSP first.

2. This guide is only about UMDGEN. It rebuilds ISO games. What do you want to do ?

Now i can possible to play MP3 files, and videos as u informed it will be ok if i change the format. But for ISO & CSO i cant..

Please start a new thread on the Mod and Firmware Section. Then ask the question. This isn't the right thread to post.

Excuse me, Where can i get my converted file after I used the batch image converter. I converted my game from cso to iso. what now? where will i get the iso file?

im going to attempt my first iso rebuild to remove dummy file, updates and just to check i can add PIC0.PNG to a iso and this will be the image that is above PIC1.png and the psp will recognize this correct? i assume it will since this is the way it works with psx eboots.
is it just a matter of dropping the PIC0.PNG,SND0.AT3 or ICON1.PMF to the PSP_GAME folder?

Edit:
also is ripkits going out of style because i cant seem to find many for the latest games and most the links on the forums are dead...
though i have found http://www.pspripkits.com and so far seems to be only one keeping up to date.

Edit2:
ok so i've been messing around and when i try to save the iso to either cso or uncompressed iso the file size is all wrong if i compress it to lvl 1 or 9 its only like 5-15mb but if i do uncompressed its like 4 GB and it started as like 1.5 GB so something isn't right, maybe ill look for another program or an update to this one cause its not working the way it should be

Hey I did the whole putting the PSP_GAME folder and BIN file into the right side of the screen, I got everything down.

After that, I save it to my folder and it gives me a .rar file. I extract it and it gives me the same thing. What should I do?

are you all sure its not giving u an iso file? because some people don't have there computer set to show the file extension like myiso.iso all u see is myiso and a file icon that looks likes library books because when you installed winrar you made it extract iso files too so now you all think its a .rar and not a .iso? just a thought i could be wrong...

logically that program shouldn't make .rar files so the last file you get is most likely a .iso that you've associated with winrar.

Yes you are true, when i changed the file association ISO from winrar i am getting a ISO FILE. But i can extract the ISO File to again to PSP_GAME & UMD_DATA.BIN with winrar. So what the defference with this UMD Generator software & winrar.. almost the same??
#19
the difference is you can make the .iso yourself and change the contents on the .iso with the program so the size is smaller or the update, music or videos are not on it then rebuild the .iso as long as you know what to remove and how to remove it.
and winrar is just for compressing and uncompressing and normally shouldn't even be associated with .iso except in terms of extracting which isn't really necessary for the average user.
if you just want to play the game then it don't matter and u just keep the .iso and put it on your memory stick's /ISO/ folder

Dear ShaggyZE ,
Thank you for your reply. However if i only to need play game, which is better to extract ISO OR CSO?
What is the defference in compared this to formats for playing games? CSO will be little file size compared to ISO. Is this the only defference?

REgards,

REgards,
If you are just going to play the game then just put the ISO or CSO into the ISO folder (Reformat your card if you dont have one via PSP, or create one).

CSO is a compressed ISO file. So, if you convert the CSO to ISO then it will be smaller size and maybe will give out some lag. Hope this clear a lot of people's problem.

@ShaggyZE, thx for helping me out when im gone :)

REgards,
So, if you convert the CSO to ISO then it will be smaller size

How do you get your computer to show them as .iso instead of a .rar? I tried unchecking the box under the options menu in winrar but it did no difference.
#24
You can't change it to show it different then what it is, its either .rar or .iso if its .iso that's all u need if its .rar then uncompressing will give you your .iso i simply mean if you have winrar setup to extract even .iso its useless as all u need is the .iso as is and some people confuse this because they don't see file types like .iso, .rar or .whatever and all they see are the library book icons for winrar associated files so they extract twice and get the folders and .bin that the psp can't play but UMDGEN can so this is what you would use to rebuild a new .iso...
anyway to fix the confusion...

Open up any window/folder in your computer like C:\ and in the top file menu under Tools > Folder Options go to the View tab and make sure u have Hide file extensions for known file types unchecked and Show hidden files and folders checked then go to the File Types tab and look for the extensions you want to change like .iso click it in the list and then click Change... to the program you use for .iso and make sure u check Always use the selected program to open this kind of file; If you don't have one i would suggest you get MagicISO and Magicdisc

Thank you. Every since I upgraded to vista the icon changed from a disc to books. Confused me at first.
