Player that plays streaming video from home server with buffering?

I have a wireless network (802.11g/b) and a HTPC that also acts as a server. The HTPC is connected to the hub using an ethernet cable.

I want to view movies (xvid and x264) on my laptop, but depending on my location, the wireless connection can't keep up. All the video players I've tried either stutter or completely choke and give an error message.

Is there a video player that will automatically buffer if it realizes the bandwidth isn't sufficient for the video?
