Strange problem re-keying divx files in VirtualDub

If I try to open a divx 5.0[.2] video in VirtualDub, using the popup extended options/re-derive keyframe flags method.. the AVI import filter comes up with a dialog showing its progress re-keying the AVI file. This particular video has 40,428 frames. However, when the AVI import dialogue pops up, it shows 80,856 (2x as many). What's more: once it passes the 40,428 mark, VirtualDub crashes. Has anyone experienced this, know what's causing it, any kind of a workaround, etc.?

Also, as a side note, a better alternative to this whole problem would be if anyone knows of an MPEG-2 video editor that can edit videos like virtual dub (cut frames, save edited video without recompressing).

Any light on either of these subjects is much appreciated.
