i am a complete beginner on burning ps2 games so bare with me a lil bit. i plan to buy a multi format burner(either sony, tdk, plextor, or liteon). i have the scph30001 model ps2 and not sur what vr. i have but specs are brws 1.2,cd 1.2, psdrvr 1.1,and dvd 1.30U not sure if that helps. So my questions start with what do i need to succefully burn and play the games on my ps2? So far i heard of a mod chip, boot program, and burn software. is this pretty much all i need? and what do you suggest through your experiences? i just want to start off on the right foot so i dont make mistakes and spend pointless money on getting stuff that isnt neccessary thank you

also i forgot to mention and ask, is theres a bunch of diferent software programs that offer copying ps2 games with just a cd burner. how reliable is this method and does it really work? is this method solid enough to use instead of bying a new dvd burner?

You will first need a modchip. This modifies your playstation so it believes copied games are the original games. There are two types of modchips: A swap modchip (requires a gameshark, action replay, or swap magic), and a non-swap modchip. Non-swap modchips are a little harder, you need to solder. If you are planning to back up cd-rom based games, you will need a cd-burner, a cd burn program (I suggest Nero Burning Rom), and some cd-r's. If you are planning to back up dvd-rom based games (which is slightly more expensive), you will need a dvd-burner, dvd-r's, and a dvd burning program (again I suggest Nero Burning Rom). For more help look at some tutorials on this site as well as other sites. Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, don't use cd-rw's or dvd-rw's. These tend to not work with most users. Disks that have had the most success are cd-r's and dvdr's. Do a search to find out which brands work the best, I use ritek dvd-r's.

Hi,
I've tried copying ps2 games with nero, and it copies them fine, but when i try to play the game i get a ps2 message saying please insert a ps2 formatted disc. is this becasue i'm using dvd+rw's or does that mean i have to get a modchip? My cousin has some copies of ps2 games that work fine and he doesn't have a modchip or anything. Is there anyway of copying games so they just work without tampering with my ps2?

thanks _D3DAiM, for your info, i think all of this stuff is starting to make sence. each time i mull it over with new info, i feel like i have a better understandig than the last but still far from being mr. confident on this subject. the second add on question i think i might of not been clear, i was talikng about progams that allow you to copy using a cd burner instead of a dvd burner. and wich mod chip should i use? is this based on preferrence or is there a science behind it?

dude just get a dvd burner. The price is way down. I've seen them under 100 bucks. I mean if your going to go to the trouble to get a chip you should get a dvd burner. Dvd r's have come down in price as well. O and you can use a flip top and smd or a mod chip. Either is fine. Mod chip hard to install for some or you have to pay someone. flip top easy to install but you have to swap disc(no really that much trouble)

I'm all over that like a donkey eatin a waffle!

ok so what im understanding is that all i need to do is have these:
1. dvd burner(already own a cd burner)
2. burning program
3. mod chip(swap or non swap)
4. and dvd-r/cd-r disc's
so if i have these 4 products i am set and ready to start backing up my games(assuming everything is installed)?so if thats all i need then my last qstion is about the different types of mod chips, swaping and non swaping. swaping u need gs,ar,or sm do you still need a mod chip with that? and a non swap witch you have to replace a chip with a new one by sodering it. an i under the right conclusion so far? flip top is this the same as usung a gs,ar,sm or just another form of moding all together. thank you for your feed back scum1 and d3daim i got a hole lot of understanding from your post and i appreciate you bearing with this newbie and my menial qstions alot

Wait, what version board of PS2 are you using? DVD Drivers 1.30U? The latest disc upgrade was 2.10, so, it sounds like you're using a system 1 PS2. You need to know which system board your PS2 has. I'm not sure, so, you may want to ask around, because I know some older models of PS2 don't support DVD-RW or +R/RW at all. I don't know if the System 1 supported DVD-R from the start or not. I know the Version 7 reads my DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW. I do know the System 1 won't read DVD-RW or +RW in movie mode. I've tested that myself.

I do know the PS2.1, what I call the system board version 1, supports DVD-R for movies, as I have tested that. Don't know if a modded PS2.1 would play game DVD-R.

thank you dbmintor for not letting me make a mistake this is why im trying to get as much info as i can. so anyway back to square one, i have my ps2 config stats on opening post and it prolly is one of the first versions of ps2, with that in mind is there any hope for me to play burned ps2 games? ok now starts the serious questions(wink), i seen alot of the comments of wether or not it will play dvd-/+r if this is the case can i still burn dvd rom games on a cd-/+r disc that can be played in a old ps2(this is the jackpot question for me)? i know theres diferent formats, but what i dont know is the diferent formats only matter in playback only? or if all ps2 games(cd rom/dvd rom) can be copy to any format such as cd for playback for what ever vr. i have? this million dollar question would help me out alot in understanding what is going on. thank you all who is trying to help me.

I tried this with Contra: Shattered Soldier for PS2. It is a CD sized game, but, I tried burning it to a DVD as a test. My modded PS2.7, with Apple V.2 chip, would only play the game when it was on a CD-R. So, it appeared to me it did matter if you used a DVD for games that would fit on a CD.

what i believed to be true is most of ps2 games are in dvd rom. so for them to be burned would i have to use a dvd-/+r? so if my v of ps2 wont play a dvd-/+r does that mean i cant play any burned new game as most are in dvd rom format

That's about the way I've seen it. Without DVD's, only CD sized games would work. And, with my Contra test, CD sized games had to be burned to CD's. I guess because of the different way the lasers handle CD versus DVD. But, yes, most games are in DVD-5 size format, with a few in DVD-9.

What I did was purchase a pre-modded PS2. That way you get the right PS2 model, the latest PS2 model, the mod chip, the latest/best versions of the chip, you don't have to worry if you installed it right, and it gets tested for you. I got mine from www.universalvideogames.com In fact, you can even e-mail them and see if they mod your old system. From what I've seen, they're very competent about what they're doing :) and have been fairly quick to reply back.

I'd recommend the Duo chip. Unlike older chips, the only time you have to hold in the Power button is if you need to turn OFF the chip. My Apple V2 requires the Power button be held in to load some discs and sometimes requires a soft reset. So, the less times you spend reseting it the better. :) If you want to go a little more expensive, the DMS3 has an interesting extra feature: flash ROM so you can update the chip's BIOS with new code discs. However, there are very few updates that have been released, so, it's a personal choice if you want to balance out that feature with the higher cost.

the flip top and swap magic disc are Compatible with every PS2 version (V1-V10). You can back up your games. If your games are on dvd then you need to back up to dvd-r if they are on cd then you need to back up to cd r. Do you know what version ps2 you have? I have a version 4 and a flip top with smd. It works great so far. Figure out which version you have. go here http://www.modchipshop.com/ps2/v5v6v7.htm

thank you so much for the site scum1, that helped out alot. oh boy what a relief it was to find out i have a v4 model. so my quest can continue, lol. so with that said i should be in pretty good shape then? now all i have left to do i figure out which mod chip i should use. i want it to be as easy as possible but fit into my price rang as well. what i mean by easy is not a hole lot of steps, but if its not that bothersome its ok. also dont want to disface my ps2 either. you said the flip top what is that about? and to db i will be cheking out site to see if the price ranges are affordable thank you for that info as well

Oh, one thing I wanted to add. Something I discovered about mod chips for PS2's. It's not a problem with newer PS1 mod chips, but, for the PS1, there were some anti-mod protection schemes made for some discs, especially on foreign discs. For instance, the Rockman Complete Works collection from Japan. While these boot fine on a modded PS1 with a stealth mode chip inside, these games would not play on the Apple V2 modded system. I don't know if this is still the case, but, last I asked around about it, no PS2 mod chips would play these discs, though some Russian programmers had claimed it was being done. No results, though, so, I disregarded that info. Don't know how current it is today.

oh the flip tops looks cool, i wouldnt mind using this option at all. so with the flip top, all i would need is the smd(no mod chip)?also and what smd do you use the v2 or 3?
