Tools used:

DVD Decrypter
XVID Codec
DVD2AVI (I used version 1.77.4)
VirtualDubMod (I used version 1.5.10.2)

Method (for 16:9 PAL):

1] Rip the DVD using DVD Decrypter, using IFO mode, and no file splitting.

2] Load the VOB file into DVD2AVI to extract the audio (VirtualDubMod does pick the audio, but I do it this way), preview the movie to determine FPS, and aspect ratio. SELECT MENU OPTION: AUDIO > OUTPUT METHOD > DEMUX (AC3, MPA, DTS). Select the audio track you want by selecting AUDIO > TRACK NUMBER > #

(Use the "VTS_01 - Stream Information.txt" which DVD Decrypter creates to determine audio track number)

Example "VTS_01 - Stream Information.txt" file:

0x80 - Audio - AC3 / 6ch / 48kHz / DRC / English / LBA: 690 / PTS: 00:00:00.287 / Delay: 0ms (THIS IS TRACK 1)
0x81 - Audio - AC3 / 6ch / 48kHz / DRC / Deutsch / LBA: 691 / PTS: 00:00:00.287 / Delay: 0ms (THIS IS TRACK 2, AND SO ON...)
0x82 - Audio - AC3 / 6ch / 48kHz / DRC / Français / LBA: 692 / PTS: 00:00:00.287 / Delay: 0ms
0x83 - Audio - AC3 / 6ch / 48kHz / DRC / Italiano / LBA: 693 / PTS: 00:00:00.287 / Delay: 0ms
0x84 - Audio - AC3 / 6ch / 48kHz / DRC / Español / LBA: 694 / PTS: 00:00:00.287 / Delay: 0ms
0x85 - Audio - AC3 / 2ch / 48kHz / DRC / English - Director's Comments / LBA: 695 / PTS: 00:00:00.287 / Delay: 0ms
0xE0 - Video - MPEG-2 / 720x576 (PAL) / 16:9 / Letterboxed / LBA: 683 / PTS: 00:00:00.287 / Delay: 0ms

Now save the DVD2AVI Project. This will produce an Audio file (something called: "AC3 T01 3_2ch 448Kbps DELAY 0ms.ac3"

Close DVD2AVI

3] Load the VOB file into VirtualDubMod. Select the Audio track (just select any track as we will load audio later). Once the file has been parsed. Select the menu option: STREAM > STREAM LIST. Disable the audio file which was already loaded.

Click on ADD, and load the audio file created by DVD2AVI and move the track to the top of the list. Click OK (NOTE: While writing this I noticed a SPEAKER icon on the audio track, which you can turn on and off. I have never noticed this before. I have yet to find out what it does. I am currently "encoding" a film now, with the SPEAKER {ON}, to see what it does :P)

Now go to the VIDEO menu item, and select FULL PROCESSING MODE.

Now select FILE > FILE INFORMATION and make a note of the film length. (hours, minutes....)

Again, go to the VIDEO menu item, but this time select COMPRESSION... and select your XVID codec. Click on CONFIGURE:

Click on LOAD DEFAULTS, to be safe, then working from the top:

For the "Profile @ Level: (unrestricted)... click on MORE and then ASPECT RATIO. Change "Pixel Aspect Ratio" to 16:9. Then click OK.

Keep "Encoding Type" to single pass.

Make sure you are working with "Traget Bitrate". If you see a button saying "Target Quantizer", click on it to change it to "Target Bitrate"

Click on CALC:
From DVD to PS3 (AVI with full surround sound)

I then do the following:

Target Size = 2150400 (2.1 GB)

I then set the film length, and the correct FPS (as shown via DVD2AVI).

I then change Audio Format to "AC3", and load the audio file (which we used earlier) to pick up the Audio properties.

I then OK everything, and then let her rip :)

Well, it works for me.

I like this method. I will have to try it!

I use DVD Decryptor.. but I noticed it hasn't been updated to some of the recent DRM on some discs (semi pro is an example). But regardless I will have to try this method for full surround!

Is there a different method for NTSC??
Thanks for the post!

Dvdfab platinum has a dvd to PS3 mode in its mobile section. You have a full 30 days to try it out before you need to purchase.

What are the benifits to using xvid or w/e? I have been using somethign called smart ripper and after I have it make a vob of the precise episode or movie I then just rename it from .vob to .mpg. I think it look and sounds great.

But again If i was to use this method what does it do better than what I have been doing? Does it make it so you can see like the movie menu or something?

Sounds good... what is the file size, and audio format of the final movie, would be good to know :)

I just use xvid to compress the file down, and I know that my PS3 supports xvid/divx etc.

If you want to rip movies your way, I suggest using dvdfab HD decrypter first, as dvd decrypter has not been updated in years.
