can you swap one OEM xbox HDD for another?

    my (orginal) xbox recently died and i was wondering if i could open it and remove the HDD and put it into a different working xbox unit -or do i need to have it softmodded or chipped inorder to do this?

    simply put you can't do that.

    The xbox hard drive and motherboard are a pair. What makes them a pair is called the eeprom. The eeprom is a code that unlocks the hard drive when the xbox boots. Each xbox and motherboard have their own unique eeprom.

    If you put the hard drive from another xbox in a different xbox it will boot with an error 6 (xbox can not unlock the hard drive). If you could unlock the hard drive and lock it with the eeprom from that xbox it would work.

    There's a thread that's pretty active, that deals with this issue.
