DVD converting and Media Extender

Hi everyone. I am trying to use windows media center and my xbox 360 as an extender to watch movies. I rip the DVD's the the HDD. Then I need to convert them to a video format windows likes. i.e. WMV or MPEG. I use AVS video converter which works good, the only issue I have is that I'm not getting the quality I'm looking for. What is the best format to convert the DVD too? If anyone has experience with AVS video converter, or has a better suggestion i'd appreciate it. Thank you
