I suspect your problem was never the battery. Apple may have reduced its quality because they think they could.

I was 'talking' with someone after 3 ipods he was looking at a Zune. I tried to talk him out of that one. The hardware is great. I got my son one last X-Mas for less than $90 delivered. The software is horrific and is the only mp3 player that will only accept its own software to sync. It would be fine if you do not sync much. We had to load just the tunes he wanted on his Zune onto a standalone computer then install Zune there. It worked fine. I biggest problem I had with that software is it wanted to search every drive on every computer connected to the network for music. It was not completed in a week. All the computers being accessed did not run right because they were serviving that app from hell. I couldn't find an option to turn that off. I had to kill the computer. Originally, we made a sync list then synced and it ignored the sync list. It was set to use the sync list. It may have been too busy looking for music to pay attention to settings. From what I have gathered user do learn to live with the software.

I suggested he buy a 8 G nano. You can't keep a huge amount of music on one of those but you can always swap out every few months. That is a small price to pay for the extra battery life and relyability. I have a 2 year old 4 G and it is like new.
