So LOCO thought we should have a separate thread for Graphics cards. All the info about them goes HERE.
u stole my first post boozer i ordered a 4850, should be here soonish. does anyone want any tests done to it? mind i only game at 1280x1024 due to monitor (which is next upgrade)
Of course we do! I heard it runs hot but it's because the TIM is not applied properly. Maybe you should start with that lol.
ill wait for some money and buy a http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=810140 i have heard its got some amazing reviews. i wont OC till then, as i assume eevrythign will run maxed at 1280x1024, bar crysis (which i dont play due to it being a poor game)
Crysis isn't bad. I would consider it MEDIOCRE. Let's see what happens. I'm getting back into the whole PC building thing(personally, I was still building computers for others) so I might be getting myself a 4850 as well. Are they still going to make a GDDR5 version?
I can run test on my HD4850 when I get it Friday...I can do real world at 1920x1200 on my 24"... I'll can do comparisons with my 8800GT that I got yesterday...
sorry wrong thread forgot where i was at.wont happen again i promise. not wanting to ruffle feathers.
lol That GREAT 8800GT! I promise. Seriously, it's a great card. I taped up some openings in that card so it did a better job of putting all the hot air out of the case(it's dual slot but it doesn't push out all the hot air out of the case).
I heard that if you remove the cover completely...it will cool the card better...I will try both ways and see...
If anyone still wants to buy an HD 4850 for $20 cheaper, use coupon code "VGA62320" at newegg, and you get a $20 discount No, wait... $&@!*&!!! they took off the coupon code....
That Akasa cooler looks suspiciously like an 3870 stock cooler, wouldn't you say? In any case, Akasa make half decent fans so it shouldn't make such an irritating noise, and it should run at speeds other than 25%! lol If you've got a 4850 Shaff, even a 4850 can max Crysis. With the exception of AA (because Crysis' AA is appalling), single 4850s are making 20+fps or so at 1920x1200 with everything maxed out. At 1280x1024 therefore you should be looking at about 30-35 - no more, since you're only running a 3Gig duo - Crysis' CPU Ceiling seems very restrictive. To respond to your question in the PC building thread Lp, the HD4870 should still be $300 RRP.
oright, ill give crymark 2007 a go. LOL its even more popular than 3dmark for benching hehe. sam i have been reading review, its mean to be whisper quiet and does cool brilliantly, and vent the air, which you dont see often on 3rd part coolers. right now i got a x2900GT, and its cooler is quiet, at about 30% is a small hushhhhhhh, at 100% is a little personal jet engine.
Anyone seen this? They seem to be giving it away with the HIS 4850. It says it reduces video signal noise. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16800997026
Lol @ the price, description and how pointless it is. I don't see any anomalies in the signal for my picture, and at the resolution I run I would expect to!
Well it IS free with a 4850. I mean if I am getting a video card, might as well get somethin for free.
true - if you have the room to waste a PCIe 1x slot - it might prove a bit problematic for those using third party coolers.
I think the 4850 is an awesome card. It matches the 9800GTX easily. I don't regret jumping on my 8800GTS when I did though. It's plenty powerful enough for now. The 4850 would not be a significant upgrade anyway. But I do intend to get a 4870 after the first big price drops. That's the kind of performance I've been waiting for. That thing is silly fast. It beats the 9800GTX without breaking a sweat and easily matches the GTX 280. Granted, the GeForce 8/9 series is still good enough for any game out there. My 8800GTS 320MB happily played Lost Planet, HL2: Ep2, UT3, GoW, Mass Effect, CoD4, and others maxed out. But ATi made their come back with style. Their cards demolish everything and are fairly cheap to boot Hopefully, AMD can do the same thing with their processors. Maybe they'll release a Phenom that can hit 3GHz+. At that point, I'm entirely an AMD/ATi man again Suffice to say, Phenoms are roughly the same as Core 2 Quads clock-for-clock. They just can't go as high. So I would not feel compromised in performance with a 3GHz+ Phenom if that were attainable... I'd like a 3.2GHz Phenom and a 4870 please EDIT: Something interesting to add. I heard somewhere that you need a 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo to avoid bottlenecking an 8800GT. So what are we looking at for the 4870? 3.4GHz+? This also seems to depend on the game in question. I've seen certain games pulling near identical performance using an 8800GTX with a 3GHz Core 2 and a 3GHz AMD X2. Others, like Crysis, can be extremely CPU dependent, but only in lower resolutions AFAIK.
The Phenom 9850 2.5Ghz seemed to bench a little under the 2.4Ghz Q6600 - and given the greater 'power per clock' of the 45nm quads, I'd guess that AMDs are still behind clock for clock, plus as you say, they don't overclock a damn. The HD4850 doesn't just match the 9800GTX in a lot of games, even solo it beats it hands down in a fair few titles. It's more than worth its asking price.
AMD really brought it back in a big way. I'm anxious to see what kind of mid-range they offer. The 4650 might be decent on its own. Currently, I don't see a whole lot of people giving up their 8800GTS/GTX just yet. There is still a lot of life left in those cards. They are still among the best for most games. Aside from Crysis, I have no real reason to upgrade. But I loved Crysis, so I'm getting the 4870 to max it out. Dx9 Very High looks amazing, but sadly, my card struggles with it in places. As stated earlier, I want to wait for price drops. $300 is still pretty steep for one card.
