I have a dell dimension 2400 that is about 5 years old. I have a 256 and a 512. I was thinking of 2 g. Is that possible and what kind is compatible?

No, the max your system can take is 2x512MB=1GB. Make sure both the sticks you use are the same brand, speed, model. I recommend Corsair memory. You need DDR1 PC2700.

don't have to buy from dell as you can buy cheaper from other places that also sells to dell. dell does not make their ram but gets it from other companies & charges a big markup if sold seperately.
