Just a follow up. I tried to convert again using
Avi2Dvd with the HCEnc option but the program crashed with a problem with hcbatch.exe. This is the log file that was given but it is not too helpful

On a prior attempt, I got an error that said: Access Violation at address 10023768 in module 'avispliter.ax' Read of address 02549000.
