I hope someone can help me. I am not very computer savy, but I have been using shrink & fab for years to rip /compress dvds. Suddenly, it is taking 8-10+ hrs. for both programs to work, and it's not just new dvds. I have reinstalled the programs, defraged, checked IDE channel settings (all are ultra dma mode 5, checked & rechecked the settings in the programs...nothing is working. I have not added any new programs or hardware recently, either. I can find no virus, spyware, etc...on the computer. I am at a total loss. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't doubt that your primary IDE channels are ultra dma mode 5 but what does it say about your secondary channels?

I tried uninstalling the IDE controllers, and nothing is different. When I try to encode with shrink, it says it's going to take 6 hrs. When I try with DVDfab, it says 15 hrs. Is there anything else to try? Both of these prorams were working fine a week ago. I have tried system restore also...didn't work. Thanks for your input.

So we're not talking about burning here. We're talking about encoding?
When you uninstalled the IDE controllers was it for the primary or secondary?

I did the primary and the secondary. Both were already listed as DMA, but I tried it anyway. Yes, I burn with nero...and it does fine. It is the encoding that is taking so long with both of the programs. It takes up to 15 minutes just to analyse the disk; it used to take a few minutes. Once they are on the computer, I can burn with no problem.

So are you trying to encode to your hard drive straight off the disc?
At least that's what I'm gathering. Rip the files to your hard drive. Remove the discs and then try using your programs to encode to a new folder.

I have reinstalled, and it doesn't change anything. I use either shrink or dvdfab to put the files onto my hard drive. If I use shrink, then I just burn those files with nero. If I use dvdfab, next I use shrink to compress them, and then burn them.

Instead of using Nero to burn, try ImgBurn.

Did you try to get the files to your HDD without encoding?

No. I don't know how to do that. When i use shrink, I either open the disk or the file from the drive. It analyses it, and then I back it up. That is what takes hours. It used to work fine. I don't think it is the program, as I am also having a long time to wait with dvdfab as well.

You're putting a big strain on your DVD drive. At this rate you'll be lucky if you don't wear it out.
Use DVDFab HD Decrypter to get the files to your HDD. Then open those files with DVD Shrink.

I have been doing it this way for 3+years now. I do use DVDFab HD Decrypter to get the files to my HDD, when shrink won't open them. And if I use it(DVDFab HD Decrypter ), then I use shrink to compress the files. Them I burn them with Nero. The problem is that until just last week, I could backup the movies with shrink or dvdfab in about an hour or so...now it takes 10+ for either program to get the movie on my hard drive. I have a separate hard drivbe that I store the movies on until i burn them.

Your drive is having problems. You probably wore it out.
Just try it the other way.
That's about all I can offer unless someone has an idea.
I would not want the laser in my drive running for 10 hours.

I have been using this process to rip/burn movies for 3+years. It hasn't been taking 10 hours the whole time. It usually takes about 1 hour to get the movie to my hard drive with either shrink, or dvdfab. Within the last week, it has been taking 10+ hours for shrink or dvdfab to run...I DIDN"T let it run that long.

It looks like your DVD drive needs to be replaced. I can rip a Full Dics DVD in less than 30 minutes.

I have 2 DVD drives and they both work just fine. I can play the movies without any issues at all. The problem is with DVD Shrink and DVDfab decrypter taking hours to rip a movie to the hard drive. I just can't figure it out.

Well, I would try something diferent...if I knew what to try?? However, these two programs were working just fine. There has to be a reason that they suddenly started taking so long to rip a movie. I would like to find a solution to that problem if at all possible. From all the posts that I have read, it seems like there are a number of people having the same issue. Only I have not been able to resolve it with a DMA solution, or anything else as of yet. Is there anything else to try so that I can continue to use these programs? If not, what other program/methods do you recommend?
Thanks for your help.
