I recently read an article in PCWORLD magazine that almost all LCD HDTV'S are being made by the same say 6 factories then labeled according to the brand and options they have asked for so actually the chips and screens are all the same. Now the only 3 companies who did not join this cost saving action are TOSHIBA, SONY, & SAMSUNG, Sony & Toshiba are sharing in the costs of building thier tv's one provides the screens & chips=Toshiba, while Sony handles the remotes/frames/inputs & options. Funny how those two compete against each other on one level and are in bed together on another. SAMSUNG who's tv's have got the highest user ratings and tech reviews across the board for superior picture also come at substantial prices but you can get good deals online check out Newegg.com & Tigerdirect.com but there are many good online sources for Samsung who still builds, and produces thier own tv's. Now I just picked up an Olevia lcd hdtv and I can tell you it is quite good out performs my PHILIPS and was way cheaper I feel I got more bang for the buck it's hard to spend alot when I know the technology is always changing anything you buy now is already out of date just like computers. I hope this helps you pcworld.com and pcmag.com have hdtv buying guides & performance reviews as does consumer reports.

If you are going to be spending that kind of cash, wait for the Mitsubishi LaserVue to drop in a few months. It's basically a rear projection tv, but it's so slim now, they aren't nearly as heavy and they don't take up all the space in your living room.

Olevia just declare bankruptcy. I just visited a friend in Houston who had just bought a 50" DLP Samsung (under 1 grand) and it had every bit as good a picture as my 40" Sammy LCD.

I too this week was ready to purchase my first LCD HDTV. My first option was the latest Samsung Series 6 40" LCD which was launched this week here in New Zealand. Samsung Series 6 40" LCD This in my opinion is as good if not better than Sony's leading Bravia X Series. Good colors, sharp picture quality & nice darker blacks considering it is a LCD and not a plasma. Also noticed... like Sony's Bravia X series it doesn't lose as much picture/contrast quality when viewing on a angle. I almost convinced myself this was the best HDTV on the market LCD or Plasma in its price range of $2999 NZ ($2292 USD). That was until I was shown the new state of the art Panasonic 42" Plasma TH-42PY800 $3100 NZ ($2359 USD) Panasonic 42" Plasma TH-42PY800 The picture of the Panasonic Plasma just blew me away and the Samsung LCD. I was so impressed with its depth, contrast & picture quality I upgraded and purchased sight un-seen the 50" equivalent $3999 NZ ($3043 USD) which doesn't arrive in NZ until next week. These were not cash prices either! So expect some discount if you have the money in hand. I wasn't the only customer at the store to purchase this 50" model sight un-seen as 3 others had beat me to it. The local store had to place another purchase order with Panasonic as they had sold half of this model before they have even arrived in the shop. This must say something about the quality of this leading Panasonic Plasma. Just take a look at the specs Full HD 1920 x 1080p with a 1,000,000:1 contrast. Outstanding TV at an Outstanding entry price from Panasonic. This will capture the imagination of mid market consumers for sure! I'd like someone to show me another HDTV on the market in this price range with the same specs and picture quality as the Panasonic 42" & 50" Plasma TH-PY800. Just thought I'd inform all of consumers here of this great new HDTV before purchasing anything of less quality.

    Regards

    Hey ya BazNZ,

What retailer did you get your plasma from? I was originally looking at the Philips 42PFL9532 as it had great colours, but the detail in the blacks is crap (well compared to the sony Bravia X that was next to it anyway, which didn't have as good a colour reproduction). Anyway, I'm keen on the new 50" plasma from Panasonic, just got to find the best price....

    Thanks
    James

I got mine from 100% but Bond & Bond, Harvey Norman & Noel Leeming all stocked the 42" version in store. I had to pre-order the 50" as it wasn't available until Wednesday.

LG's are great. That is my opinion. I think they have beautiful pictures and they look sleek.
