Afterdawn has some very good guides on softwares and methods. Unfortunately, I could not save them for future reference or print them (even while using the Fanfold 14.5 x 11 in. size to generate a PDF). The edges are simply cut off (even with 'no margin'), and removes important information at times. Also the problem with the printing of pictures (screen shots)in HTML documents is there. It would be nice to have the 'printable document/page' feature in your site. One can then work on a different computer with the guides available handy. Sourin
Copy and paste. Take the used ink carts to somewhere other than Staples as they no longer honor them nicely. Office Max still takes 'em, i think. I'll find out tomorrow.
rdmercer1: yep! 7thsinger: I am stationed in Europe. Here, the 'Pelikan' company gives you a plastic envelope to send them back - postage free! But the full cartridges cost a lot. Thanks! On our way-too-long to-do list, we have one item that hopefully will be launched in next 6 months' time or so (wont help you now, but just as a future reference..): -allow downloading guides in .pdf format Which would mean that we build separate .pdf versions of our guides meant purely for printing purposes, with nice ToC page, etc. The feature would most likely be reserved only for the registered members.
Eeerrrrrm.. firefox >file >print (or print preview or page setup) or even if you feel brave.. file >save page as > ..which will save it as a full webpage you can open locally in a browser and print/mess about with to your hearts content. The future pdf feature looks promising, it can be done with a little bit of jiggery pokery now, but I think it comes under the "advanced pc use" tag Took me about 30 seconds, and I could now edit and clean it up if I wanted to print it. http://www.zshare.net/download/157234588a3d9f4a/
Have you tried saving (Save As) the Afterdawn web pages in IE? It did not work for me. My strategy at the moment: 1) Try to 'Save As' - Complete 2) Try to 'Save As' - HTML only 3) Print to Adobe Distiller or AdobePDF using 'Fine Print' to create a PDF. The last method always works, but is Set-Up dependant and a lot of garbage comes in. One also has to print the article page by page. Try it when your wife is calling you to come down for the dinner! Why would I want to save anything using IE? It's easy enough to go through a guide and save the images and text to a directory, then use some desktop publishing software to make a nice article.. Not something you want to be trying to do on the fly or in a rush.. Anyway.. I just bookmark guides.. and print any notes I need to take away in a form I understand.. I'm a miser so pretty pictures don't do it for me... and how many "outsiders" windows pc's have acrobat installed?? In my experience about 30%
I was just trying to printout some guides and having tons of problems - using Mozilla Seamonkey 1.1.11 it totally hangs the browser, using mozilla firefox 3.01 the right side of the page cuts off and refuses to print anything after about 1/2 a page down, and using IE v6something has similar issues. Thought I was going crazy since I used to be able to do this - can't do it now though and don't know why not. Came up here to the forums intending to ask what the secret is how to print things out but I found this thread so I guess it's not (easily) possible anymore (?). As an old school type of person that needs hardcopy instructions of new topics that I read over and over again then highlight pertinent sections that I need to follow through step by step and make notes in order to get where I need to be learning something new or installing/configuring/using software - I would greatly appreciate some way to print the guides. Seems like quite the shame to have such good work but unable to actually make use of it!!!!! Sigh.
copy/paste the text.. images.. right click and "save image as" then use scribus of something similar to make a nice page layout.. job done.
Thanks. I had actually tried doing that (cutting/pasting into MSWord) but I was not getting the images for some unknown reason. Tried again after a reboot and now I can get them too! So that helps a lot, but still, it doesn't come out that great layout wise (but usable), and is kind of a pain. A feature to print out the pages as they are on in our browser, or an option to get a PDF, would be super great, and do proper justice to all the hard work put in by the folks who wrote the guides ;-) And just out of curiousity - what is it about this website that prevents proper printing of pages direct from browsers? I don't have this problem printing similar things from other websites, just this one. I don't know much of anything about website design but am assuming this is some kind of byproduct of the website itself?? Thanks again.
Not sure.. it could be something to do with all the external links used as images and the other links.. some browsers will try to follow those links and end up downloading whole websites as a result. You see an image.. say this one as part of the page.. but really it's somewhere else. It only looks like it is on the same page because your browser is instructed to show it instead of just a link http://i.my.afterdawn.com/standard/15775.jpg In years gone by web pages were more wysiwyg, pages where things were much more like what you saw.. images coded in the html on the same page.. which is why they were easier to print what you saw on the screen.. but now they aren't. It's not that easy to explain in a few sentences.. if you have firefox try view→page source and you will get an idea of where the different parts you are seeing are all coming from.
