i have a small maybe BIG problem on my hands with my new PS2

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=290246142655

I bought this off of ebay a few days ago the guy said that ps2 locks up during game play and needs to be reset... I played MLB 2004 for about 2 hours and during the end of the 2 hours it had locked up and I had to reset the console and resume game play.
I tried this with a new ps1 game from a buddy of mine and the game and system played great except for another lock up once again!

Has anybody had this similiar problem and able to fix this on their own without taking it to a repair shop and paying big bucks to fix something they can't ?
My PS2 bios is SCPH 39001, could it be possible that the system may need a bios relash to corret the problem ?

I am getting GT 3 today in the mail and I would love to be able to playout without any problems.

Either cpu overheating, psu intermittent fault.. also heat related, or the laser is failing after a certain amount of time.

I used to be in the console repair business.. ps2's aren't worth fixing. it is cheaper to sell it on and buy a perfect one. @ £16 an hour labour you are at £32 before the fault even shows up........

BTW.. bios is irrelevant.. it is held in a rom.. can't be flashed. You have some unspecified hardware error probably caused by heat. If the stickers are off then somebody else has been in there trying to fix it before and given up.

Unless it is the usual disk read error we don't even bother taking the top off these days.. uneconomic.

Ok, let me ask this,
I had just got gran turismo 2 in the mail the disc's were very clean with no scratches, I booted up the PS2 the first time and during loading pass the PSX logo screen and sony presents I had got a black screen instantly and it froze and the screen flickered twice while trying to load the disc.
When I did it the second time again whiping the disc once with a cloth it had booted up instantly without any jitterie sounds or locks up at all I played the arcade disc for about the same time I did MLB and no lock up.
Could it possibly be the lens needs to be cleaned with a certain device or a new laser lens ?
My gut is telling me it is the laser lens itself, but I wanted to clear it with you all first before I make the wrong move...
