hello , i got this little old pc that used to work great in and off the internet, but suddenly stop working :

when i turn it on it starts and seems like the operating system is loading i can see the windows 2000 logo and the blue bars advancing but when they bar is full blue it shuts off by itself and then it starts again doing the same thing till i press F8 and choose "start in safe mode" then starts fine.

please if someone knows or did fix a similar problem help.

try unplugging the hard drive and connect it to another computer, as a slave. then do a chkdsk of the drive, and see if there are any errors.

worked when my uncle's xp desktop went in an endless startup. the master boot record was corrupted, and chkdsk fixed it.

sounds like yours is doing the same thing, except mine wouldn't boot in any mode.

you can run chkdsk in safemode. it will reboot the compter and run chkdsk instead of normal startup.

Another thing you might want to try if you don't feel like taking the hard drive out is inserting a Windows XP install CD and booting into the recovery console. You could run a chkdsk against the drive letter from the command prompt that recovery console gives you.

You need to actually boot off of the CD. Insert the CD, reboot the computer, enter your BIOS (F2) and change the boot order to boot from the CD drive first as opposed to the HDD. Once the CD is loaded, you will see an option to press "R" to boot into the recovery console.

If it doesn't have anything important on it. Format, and reinstall Windows 2000 back on it. Better yet, if it's that old Windows 98 SE would be the ticket.

i was to do the "taking the hard drive out and put it in another pc" next saturday but while we get to that day i was trying the "reboot with the xp disc" but wasnt working even with the F2 key so i went to safe mode again but the setup utility for the xp didnt work then i put the windows 2000 cd in and start working and resinstalling the system again.... now i am upgrading to xp right now. i cant wait to see if is gonna work..
