To see which port your USB adapter is connected to, connect your USB adapter and follow the following instructions:

    1. Go to the Start Menu
    2. Right click on "My Computer"
    3. Select "Properties"
    4. Click on the "Hardware" tab
    5. Click on "Device Manager"
    6. Click the + sign next to "Ports (COM & LPT)"
    7. One of the listed ports should indicate which port your USB adapter is connected to (e.g. COM1, COM2, COM3, etc.)
    8. Go back to your map software program that you use to transfer data and make sure it is looking at the correct port.
    9. You should be able to transfer data once the correct port is selected

If you need drivers go here

    http://www.gilsson.com/usb_drivers_download.htm

Follow my advice to step 7. Locate your USB Adapter (port *)

Right click on that port and select properties. Then select port settings, then select advanced. At the bottom of that tab will be a drop down box with the port selected (port * in your case). Use the drop down to select another port (eg 1, 2 or 3). If the port you want to use is already allocated to something else, you can use the same procedure to reassign that port after you have finished.
Save the selections in the usual way. The USB converter will be permanently assigned to the port you selected.

I own up to failing to follow the guide on connecting my USB cable to my desktop. I did it in the wrong order. I have tried uninstalling the USB port in the Control Panel and re-booting and re-connecting but I cannot get a driver, which is suppose to reside on the supplied mini-CD disk, to attach to the 'new hardware'. I have tried the gillson website and that fails as well. All I have in Hardware devices is a USB 2.0 device which is highlighted in yellow. Can anybody suggest a way around my problem please? Thanks

My USB device is showing up under 'Other Devices'.

As I am unable to attach a driver I cannot follow Celts process.

I am bemused by the Gilsson website as I cannot download their manuals nor does downloading the XP Drivers reolve my driver problem.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks

With XP your adapter should be picked up by PnP. Can you send me a link to the adapter you are using? I presume you are using a null modem and USB adapter combi?

The PnP has picked up the hardware(i.e. the USB cable) .I will be attaching an Eurovox EX5000PVR when I can get a driver installed to my USB2.0SER. I don't seem to be having much luck. Have you any other suggestions?

    Thanks

I have sorted it out now. There appears to be some problems with some mini disks which are sent with the EX5000. I was fortunate enough to have a 9 pin port available on my 'old' desktop. Therefore,I did not need to use the USB cable and associated disks/drivers. The drivers are also suppose to be on the Demo disk as well. I just used the 'Null' cable. Thanks to all especially sc0User for endeavouring to assist.
