Did you try plugging it back into your computer and using the restore feature in Itunes.

Thats the only method that worked on my 30gig when I had a power failure one time while it was plugged in.

Ok so the computer doesn't recognize it but does Itunes see it or not.

Another suggestion is to toggle the Hold switch on and off
as it shows in the The Five Rs for iPod on the apple support site.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1383?viewlocale=en_US

Was it fully charged as that could be the problem now too if its not.

Do you have a warranty yet, you could send it in.

I actually had an ipod nano go through the washing machine, so for it I left for 1 week or so to dry out and thoroughy drain the battery.

I then connected it to my pc and it charged up and turned on, but the display was hooped.

Ok well that does suck big time for you.
As the last resort then I would let it drain right out for about a week or so, then maybe try connecting it to pc again.
Even on a new usb port if you have one.

Don't know if your into fixing yourself or not as there are great links out there on how to fix ipods, or if its worth it or not.

There are also, I know in Canada anyway, places that have free testing or almost free. They diagnose then tell you what it will cost, or will offer to buy for salvage.
