I somehow managed to hook up my sony DV to my VHS & record an old family movie onto my sony Dv tape.
Then i connected my DV to my computer via Firewire as normal to capture it to my PC.

This is where i have problems - the program i am using A(Ulead Video Studio) wil not capture the footage from the tape (however it captures normal film which i take using my camera)

It is possible that i only have a Firewire card that is not DV/AV (i heard this somewhere) and is only DV.

My question is (b4 i go out and spend more $$$) is do you think i need a new capture card or new software or both?

Is there any free-ware available that could help me first?

Any IEEE-1394 Compliant Firewire Card will capture DV from a Camcorder, There are ones that are Specificaly made for DV Capture but any Firewire card should work..You can use something free like Windows Movie Maker to Capture from your DV Camera...This is what Is confuseing Me ,Why record to DV tape?? You should be able to Do a Direct Passthrough from your VCR to your DV Camera to your PC without recording to tape, this will save a Lot of Time, I know this is Totally Possible Because I have done it with a Camcorder I borrowed off a friend and Many other Poeple do it also....Cheers
