hey guys is windows XP no longer sold by microsoft, I hust got this information from one of the forum threads. and they only provide service for vista.
This is correct, no XP products are available (except the stock some stores already had) Support was to be extended for XP until 2010 last I heard.
If you buy XP from a retail site (newegg.com, buy.com), you can still download the updates from microsoft. Mine was updated to SP3, and have had several critical updates in the past couple months get updated.
Yes win 98 can be updated to the point where microsoft stopped adding more updates (updates are more commonly known as support along with phone help etc)XP will will continue to be supported for sometime yet so i would'nt panick just yet,You can still get new or 2nd hand copies of xp or xp prof off auction sites, you can get new copies of OEM xp from computer stores, you can also get xp with a new machine if you so desire from is it dell & hp ? but you need to specifically ask for it to be installed,i think they give you xp recovery disks as well
I believe that WinXP stopped being sold on new computers on the 30th of June 2008. There were several attempts to forestall the inevitable, but XP has passed into the sunset as far as new computers are concerned. I'm sure that the supply of new XP disks will be available for years, I can still find shrink wrapped windows 95 disks on E-bay.
hey all 10Q, but rtm27 the problem I faced about SP3 is that the installation process couldn't complete. I didn't get any error for this, but it just stop and never complete ever since I tried to update from my critical update options. why is it like this?
Do a search you'll find what i'm talk'n about, you are allowed to down grade from vista to xp but you need to ask for it. @ rega007 Get the iso instead & burn it to rom then install from there if you can't find an iso contact microsoft & request they send you the SP3 disk it will be sent free of charge, there's no need to rush to install SP3,its just a compilation of SP1 & SP2 plus a few extra's to enhance xp prof networking n stuff
I have Media Center 2005 installed, which strangely enough, ccleaner identifies my OS as Windows XP SP3. I had bought my OS from newegg.com, as I had wanted to do the installation myself on the new computer I had gotten. Ok, back on topic. ScorpNZ has given some good advice. Follow his directions, and let us know how it goes.
All MCE versions are actually xp professional, the media centre bit is the 2nd disk or the 2nd part of the install of the dvd, you'd need a copy of xp prof to compare the two, they're the same
You've got a diff version than mine even tho it's mce 2005 it only contains two cd's,the extra cd you have must be a service pack
Third disk is labeled 'Updates for MCE 2005 Edition'. After installing the first 2 disks, XP Pro was up and running, and after all the updates were done, using the 3rd disk gave me all the MCE features.
You're lucky you got that set & not the one like mine, the bloody thing won't install after insertion of second disk, instead i have to do an install like the old OS's where you put the files on the hdd first,i even tried changing the dvd drive letter to D (It's as high as the mce set reads apparently,on my version that is)but it did'nt work then i found an article about it & the work around, they must've fixed it in you're set,do you wanna swap
When I bought mine from newegg.com, I had read the reviews beforehand. There were a few that mentioned it was difficult to install it properly, and one person had actually posted the order of disks to use to install it. Without that, I would have been pulling my hair out!!
