Thanks for the reply laddyboy, yeah i actually updated Nero last night whilst i was reading all the thread etc, but still no joy. the drive can watch a proper purchased dvd movie and reads any disc that has info on it, just can't detect the blank dvd's. I havn't tried a blanc cd so i might just to eliminate another possibility of what it is/isn't doing. But I don't use it just for back ups, i run a home based business where i do video editing and transfer slides/vhs etc to dvd, so it's really been a nightmare because i have been having to delay jobs for the last fortnight (pretty unprofessional). So, do you still think the program you suggested will help? i really need to be able to burn from encore, although I do sometimes burn the files to a folder and then use the VOB files to burn from Nero or sometimes shrink if i want to fit a bit more than the standard size onto a single layer disc. thanks.

Hi, me again, i'm guessing you are not from where i am (australia) so it will possibly be hours before you read this so here's an update. I had some old dvd -r's on hand, they were purchased by a client who's work i do every now and then and the discs they provided.i can't remember the brand because i've previously discarded the label around the container, but, i do recall they have AZO on them, and i tried one this morning and it worked, it burnt the files at 4 x speed, and i was wondering if it's the discs that determine the speed of the write? could it be that although my burner does up to 16 x, that the discs need to burn at a slower rate, should i buy 4 x, instead of 8x. Not too sure if the slower ones are easily obtainable nowadays, as with technology moving ahead, things are replaced quickly. Anyhow, just a thought.

okay, me again (third time). After burning the file successfully on the disc that i mentioned in the above thread with the AZO, i tried to copy from it with Nero to one of my discs. At first it didn't work, so then i took another disc from my stack, wiped it pretty vigorously (not in circular movement, in straight movement - i think you'll know what i mean), and low and behold...it worked. So i am completely baffled. I still think my burner is on the blink because i shouldn't have so much difficulty. problem is now that i am out of those discs my client gave me (not that she'll mind as she's a friend and i do her editing for free), but i don't like them because i can't print on the surface and i don't want to have to buy a stomper just so i can have my logo printed on them. My husband suggested i use a RW disc first then try copying. It may work but what a lot of double handling. You mentioned to test my burner on another system, how do i do that with an internal burner? i suppose my tech guy locally will be able to do that for me. It is so strange that so many of us have had this problem occur and we are probably from all over the place. And i have had my system for about 18months, maybe they are like all things these days electronic, not made to last like things were 20 years ago! doesn't solve the problem at hand though. Although as i rent my equipment i guess i can upgrade, but was hoping to get another 12 months out of my existing gear which i think should be reasonable.

gee, you'll be sorry i found this thread, here i am again. but hopefully all the info i provide helps to work out what's going on. the copy just finished. so just to refresh, i used Nero to copy from a disc that worked, to one of my usual discs after rubbing the surface of the disc on my clothes. Just thought i should mention that Nero completion box read "burn process completed successfully at 8x (11,080KB/s). the disc's i inserted for the copy were 8x so i guess it just detects that (you'll see i'm not so technically minded, just good at making the video's look pretty) the editing comes pretty easy, its' the computer jargon i get lost with. thanks in advance again, shouldn't have any more comments this morning. hope you can shed some more light.

hi there, more info....i bought a dvd -rw today, havn't tried to burn to it yet but when i put it in the dvd drive it was detected (unlike the other discs) but you know the window that comes up when you insert a disc giving you selections of what to do when you insert this kind of media each time, well it called it a blank cd (not a dvd), so the options to choose from were cd related only.

The speed at which you can possibly burn is dictated by both the max speed supported by the burner as well as the max speed supported by the media itself. For example, an 8X rated burner can't burn faster than 8X even with 16X media. If you have a 16X rated burner and are using 4X rated media, you may be able to burn above 4X if the burner's firmware supports doing so for that specific media, although 16X is usually out of the question.

The speed at which you should burn is that which results in the highest quality burn you can achieve within reason. A good rule of thumb is to not burn in excess of half the rated speed of the media. I generally burn at 4X or 6X since that's the best speed I'm usually able to achieve consistently on my systems.

The AZO labeled disks were probably Verbatims. Since you're dependent on these disks for your business, you should use good quality media like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and Made in Japan labeled media, especially Fuji and Sony.

Several programs will ID the actual manufacturer of any media you have. DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn in Write mode or utility programs like DVDIdentifier, DVDInfoPro, and Nero InfoTool.

WinXP recognizes blank DVDs as CDs since it has native support for CDs but not DVDs. That's why we have to use 3rd party programs for DVD creation.

Hi and thanks for your replies. I have only been using Verbatims because i knew that they were the reputable ones, and unfortunately it was with the verbatims that this problem suddenly arose. Anyhow, still not having any luck, will try out one of those downloads. Found another error which i don't know if this infulences the prob's, but you may know, i went into Nero system info and the ASPI installation is corrupted. wondered if this could be something of concern. Looked on some other forums and bit of a mixed reaction.

I'm not really sure that the ASPI layer is even needed any longer with Nero if you're using WinXP. Nero used to install its own back in the day.


Post the Nero History log for a burn and I or someone else will look at it for potential problems. The log is in this path for Nero 6:

Program Files -> Ahead -> Nero -> NeroHistory

The log is divided into sections, one for each attempt. Each section, excluding the first, begins with a Burning ROM header followed by your name and program serial number. You need not post the entire log, just one section dealing with a failed burn. Be sure to delete your name and serial number before posting.


Have you tried creating an image file with the authoring software like Nero (Nero Image Recorder as the target output device) and then burning that image file with ImgBurn? If that works, that points to Nero as the problem.

Hi again and thanks for your continued input.....Well, here's the log you asked for, just one where a burn failed. I know you said i proably didn't need to worry about the ASPI error, but I ran a test that was suggested from another forum on this website. It was a ForceASPI test.http://radified.com/ASPI/forceaspi.htm. Anyhow this did the trick, whether it's temporary or not I don't know, but i can burn now. But nevertheless, i thought it still appropriate to send you the log so you can peruse to see if anything stands out to you.
So, below is the log of an error burn where the drive couldn't detect the media. after that is a log of where it worked today. I've written some comments just prior to the second one in capital letters so it stands out to you. thanks again, your support is really appreciated.

Just a couple of comments.

Nero 6.6.1.4 is a pretty lousy version. If you run into problems with this version, I'd recommend dropping down to 6.6.0.18, imo the most stable and reliable version of Nero. To do so run the Nero 6 Clean Tool after uninstalling and then download and install both of the following packages.

The last thing is that you're using media manufactured by CMC Mag which is among the poorest quality manufacturers. Most of us recommend Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and Made in Japan labeled media, especially that by Fuji and Sony. Burning poorer quality media at 8X can be problematic in achieving a good quality burn.


Other than those two things, nothings jumps out. I see no difference in the ASPI driver between the two logs.

At least everything seems to work again, so whatever you did had its intended effect which is always good!

I understand your comments about the discs, and I normally use the verbatims only, but they hadn't worked so I used some others to see if they would. Anyhow, thanks again for all your input, and will ensure i only use top quality discs from now on, and will run the Nero cleanup as suggested. Thanks heaps.

rIGHT, hI, EXTREMELY NEW AND EXTREMELY C**P AT ALL THINGS COMPUTER-ISH. (inc turning caps lok off it would seem!) Been having the same problems as all of the above and have tried what I could understand (note here - extremely dumb when it comes to computers!) Have unstalled my dvd re-writer and window still see them as blank CD's. Have bought different kinds, -r, +r's of three different types - inc ones which used to work. Have uninstalled Nero and upgraded from 6 to 7 and the result, it still see's them as cd's (+ less hair on my head to to copious amounts of hair pulling out). My driver thingy is a nec dvd_rw ND-2510A, and I'm trying to burn iso file thingy's to dvd. Please help - am nearly resorting to bringing it to big corporate chain-store for help (Or using comp as vase stand!)

Note to any potential people who would like to help - I've said it once and I'll say it again - am very computer litterate!

It isn't unusual for blank DVDs to be recognized as CDs by the OS since there is no native support for DVDs in the OS and thus we use 3rd party software.

Do you mean Nero doesn't recognize a blank DVD is in the drive? You can also use ImgBurn to burn ISO image files. Have you tried it and does it not allow for recognizing blank DVDs as well?

The 2510 is on the "old" side and it is possible it has gone bad. Does it read DVDs OK?

Hi to Ginggirl and Laddyboy, and anyone who has been following my queries. Just to let you know that I had to resort to getting a technician to check over my pc, and long story short, My DVD burner had to be replaced. So, I'm not qualified to give advice, but I will say that if you have the prob's i have, and try all the things mentioned and it still won't work, it can't hurt to get a local technician to run some tests on the burner, at the end of the day, my burner actually had the "gong". But, I also should mention that following alot of the advice of laddyboy, did get me through temprorariliy. So again thanks. It's great to get support from(wherever you are) to me and for that support to be so prompt.

Hello all, I would be happy to read through the thread if someone thinks it will help me, but I was hoping I could tag onto this discussion for some help.

I have a Memorex DVD+/-RW True8xn (external) burner that is recently unable to read a couple different kinds of new media that I've purchased.

Can anyone make any suggestions short of buying a new burner? I'll never buy Memorex Hardware again, the customer support was ridiculous. He said "Since it's more than a year old you'll have to just get lucky with media, or buy a new burner."

I'm not sure what you mean by not being able to read. DVD D is recognizing the media OK. Can you not burn to it? Are you burning OK but the disk is not playing back in a standalone player? Does it read commercial, e.g., movie, DVDs OK?

Post the model number, but in all likelihood it burns both formats, +R and -R. If the burner is described as dual format, it burns both formats for sure. Most burners manufactured in the past 2 years are dual format. You can also download DVDIdentifier. It'll list all the media types the burner can burn.
