One more quirky issue. This concerns a COMPAQ flat running win 98. I downloaded wmp6.4 player for 98. I also downloaded a FREE firewall program. The issue is simple, neither program left an icon on the desktop. Neither is listed in the programs list nor add/remove. The setup file opened and apparently finished the respective programs. This tower is slow. Is it possible I did not wait long enough for yje install wizard to appear? If the programs DID download where and how do I find their icons and put them on the desktop. My xp tower puts an icon in the system tray also. There are none here either. Solutions please.
If the porgrams installed you should be able to find the program directory under the Program Files directory on the hard drive. From there to create the shortcut just find the .exe, right click select create shortcut, then cut and paste to desktop, but from the sounds of it these programs didn't install. Good Luck, Hope this helps
BABDIT--- I also have other problems more important than these programs, and that is speed. The response time is slow as molasses. I found two non working towers for parts. I swapped the 98 hdd for the ME hdd. Speed incread to XP speed. However I do NOT have a ne connection. The IE browser is there but no outside connection. Just as a test I put the 98 back in and conditions remained unchanged, slow but WITH a connection. My next step is to find and install yet another PC WINDOWS hdd of recent vintage to see if I can ge speed and connection. Than I will start downloading the programs again. Thank you for your insight.
Your connection problem may be that your modem is not installed or does not have the right drivers. Do you use an internal modem or external? Also is this broadband or dial-up?
I have since disposed of this machine. My tech friend is to busy to bother with this and it is not worth putting $s into it. Like always this was FREE. I will keep the two hdd in case I can use them. The modem is external and supports up to four towers. It was and is registered. The machine gave me an error mess, :software for dsl present, physical nic card missing" which of course is not true. Not worth it to me to play with it. I will look for a win xp pro hdd that I can swap in a compatible machine that runs well with a net connection using my existing modem. There are certain programs that work better on pro.
