Did I hear right that I can buy a cheaper vista upgrade version instead of full version and trick it into installing without having windows already. I do have a valid windows 95, but I don't know if that counts. Also, is it worth paying more for vista disc with SP1 or not because I can download it anyway, thanks.
I'll be quite honest with you. You can buy a genuine activation key for about half price without a disc. You can either download a copy of the disc, or copy it from a friend. 50% saving.
If I buy an OEM version and I nstall it on a PC. Can I ever remove it and install it on a different PC?
Anyone know if I can install Vista from a flash drive? Also, assuming I can find all the drivers, does 64 bit offer any advantages performance wise other than holding more memory? My new build is for a HTPC/web browser.
It's a disadvantage really. There are less programs. I have to use 64bit because 32bit doesn't support my whole PC.
I'm wondering what version of vista to buy. On ebay, OEM version goes for about $100. Upgrade version goes for about $50, but I don't think it will allow me to put this on a new build with just my windows 95 disk right? However OEM terms read as follows: NOTE: - The software is new sealed OEM bundled with "AS-IS" non-peripheral hardware to comply with Microsoft and eBay OEM regulations. This OEM software is intended for system builders only and cannot be transferred to another PC once it is installed. The purchaser of this software is required to comply with the terms of the System Builder license, including the responsibility of providing all end-user support for the software. So this says I can't transfer OS across multiple systems but you say I can?
You can do it. But you must format the drive with the OS on. Then you can. I think the message there is you can't run it on several computers at once, because there is a way.
So to clarify, upgrade disk will not work for me. But if I buy an OEM disk and want to upgrade my motherboard/cpu in the future, I can keep using the same license? I thought I had to pay for the retail version for this privilege which cost even more.
Actually I have a windows 98 SE cd key. How can I find out if it's still valid? This would allow me to buy the cheaper upgrade vista version right? Although my understanding is upgrade version is non-transferable just like the OS that comes with a new Dell computer.
Chances are, if you upgrade your mobo and stuff, you'll need to reinstall, but you can use the license again, as long as only 1 PC is running it. And with upgrading, I'm not sure if you can upgrade it from any OS other than XP. I haven't tried, or searched it. I've used my OEM license on about 3 different PC's.
Thanks for answering. So I guess there's no need to pay for retail version if cheaper OEM version works like you say. Time to pickup a OEM version unless someone can tell me If I can make the even cheaper upgrade version work?
