I have AVG 8.0 installed on my pc. I have used previous versions of
avg free and had no problem atall i just had a new pc built with a core 2 quad when i used the old version of avg free my pc was booting rapidly now that i have the 8.0 version when it gets to the welcome screen before it reaches my desktop it is taking a lot longer than usual to boot. I tried uninstalling avg and rebooting and it had no issues booting up at all is there anyway i can sort this issue. The funny thing is that 2 of my mates have it installed on there pc's and they dont have the same issue

It's in the avg main control panel.. what it is doing is checking for updates and probably running active processes checks on startup...

AVG forums are full of details for those who have problems.

It should be possible. Some people seem to have lots of problems with it, but it hasn't given me any worries so far.. That's why I'm not familiar with where the settings are.

Certainly disabling the "check for updates on start" will help things along. Often the update settings are too fierce.. every 24 hours is enough rather than the default 4 hours, which will usually trigger a check as soon as you boot up.

I found that it is a good idea to also disable automatic task scheduling.. which always seems to fire up when you are right in the middle of something..

Finally check what functions are running by default. The email scanner in particular is a bit of a hog, and if you don't use pop3 email services it is totally unnecessary.

I have AVG 8.0 on my Quad Core and all my slower machines too. It's only ever slow when running scheduled scans ie if i'd forgotten to disable scheduled scans in AVG's control panel.
A couple days ago one of my laptops (a P4) was taking ages to do anything and the hard disk was thrashing like mad, and as suspected it wasn't AVG but the hard disk has slipped into PIO mode. Sorted that in the usual way but re-reading your original post it doesn't seem that PIO is your problem. But as i say, i don't have AVG running scheduled scans, i turn those off and rely on it picking up problems the normal way ie when files are accessed as opposed to scouring the entire hard disk looking for problems..

I had the same problem and disabling searching for updates and scheduled scans helped, but only a bit. In the end I switched to avast.

I have scheduled scans disabled on my machines.
Checking for updates isn't an intensive (or long) process, methinks there's something else wrong with your machine. But if avast's more to your tastes then fair enough.

Thankfully the only problem with my machine is 512Mb of RAM lol I guess AVG was just too heavy for it and slowed it down a great deal.

I have 3 gig of ram in my pc its not slow once it has booted.
it was taking about 30 seconds to come off of the welcome screen
then when i uninstalled avg it was coming off the welcome screen to my desktop within 2 seconds. I tried everything disabling updates etc
nothing helped. I got sick of it so i uninstalled it and installed avast now its not slow booting anymore. Thanks for the help everyone
