I like the nano. ipods are still use an open connection to the computer Zunes do not. If the player uses an open connection you can use third party software to manage your music. This is important if you have a nano and a large music collection. I swap out half my music monthly. I need something that has a good sync system.

Zunes, are better if you want a disk player. There are plenty of compliants about their software but I do not recall ever seeing a hardware complaint. Do not underestimate the power of wacky software to do you harm. There was an bad upgrade that was killing Zunes. That is why I use third party software. They don't take users for granted. They actually TEST the software before it gets released.

If I was going to get a nao. I would by it used/returned from Apple. They are escentally new for cheap. I would name the ipod using Windows explored and NEVER install itunes. Today download free versions of Media Monkey and Win Amp. Itunes makes it hard to quit once you have synced your ipod. You also get used to not thinking.

I would also look into other name brand mp3 players. They are at least as good at the two you mentioned. Stay away from Chipods! They are no name mp4 players that are built from rejected parts. They look great but are throw-aways.
