Too many codecs?

This question is pertaining to .mkv files.

I recently found out that the subtitles were not loading on VLC/MPC, (although they used to) so I downloaded a few codecs:

    - Vobsub
    - ffdshow
    - Haali Media Splitter (I installed this after the previous two didn't make a difference.)

Now, the subs load on MPC but not on VLC. Also, when I play the videos on MPC, I noticed that several codec icons show up on my taskbar namely, ffdshow video decoder, ffdshow audio decoder, directvobsub, Haali Media Splitter.

Previously when the subtitles showed, I've never had any icons appear on the taskbar - which leads me to wonder if I have too many codecs installed.

And it's really weird that VLC still doesn't work (used to be my main .mkv player)

    Help anyone?

I used to get an alternate problem. If I had too many
programs set to show the subtitles I'd get double subs
in my software players. Still it sounds like you have
more than one software set as the subtitle handler.
Check on this site for configuration guides to see where
to switch the subtitle handling off. I'd turn them all
off, then turn one back on and see what happens.
