So My laser went out on my 360 (or so I thought) so I bought a new drive the same kind of hitachi, and swapped the boards and it will play almost all dvds but most of my games it has trouble booting them up and brings up the screen "to play this disc put it in an xbox 360 console" I can sometimes get them to play but it takes a million resets. Anyway My 360 is not modded and the drive is brand new so its not the laser. Basically my question is does anyone know what causes this screen to pop up and does anyone know of a fix that doesn't involve buying a new drive because in my case that clearly isn't the problem?
did you flash the drive? ive never swapped a drive before, so do you have to flash the drive to swap it? i thought you did. if you did flash it i would recommend a re-flash

his post is very confusing ... but from what i'm assuming he said is that he changed the circuit board... taking it from the old one and putting it on his new one...
Sorry if my post was confusing, but Yeah I did not flash my drive, what I did was bought a new disc drive, and put the old circuit board from my old drive into the new drive, so I wouldn't have to flash it. I've read that this is an acceptable way of avoiding having to flash my drive, (which i don't know how to do). Anyway as I mentioned my 360 is not modded at all, I am just trying to fix it.
why didn't you just buy a new laser assembly for your old drive?? they seem to sell those a lot on ebay.
anyways its very hard for anyone here to help cause you're the one with the hardware in front of you... its impossible for anyone to say that you took it apart the right way or the wrong way or that you put it back together the right way or the wrong way... how would we know ??
Well... sorry to tell you but it's the board, i've had the exact same problem and sold the 360 because i didn't want to deal with it anymore. Hitachis are nortorious for doing this.
So what you need to do is flash the new drive (with the new board) and you should be set to go. You can still get everything off the old drive so it shouldn't be much of a chore. You can probably even sell your old drive for parts on ebay.
Thanks very much for the information and response, Iv'e been on this site and llamma.com forever researching my situation and couldn't find any helpful information at all. Anyway I'm going to try to find a tutorial to flash my new drive and I'll let you know how it turns out. Any tips on flashing would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
