this one is quite good: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/533828 the only problem 'some' (like me) might run into is that the eeprom.bin is not always recognized if you put it in the eeprom folder. if it is not recognized, just copy the file to a floppydrive and let the program look for it on the floppydrive path! (if you need to softmod / build new/standard drives, it is recommended to NOT put the eeprom.bin file in the eeprom folder. because if you have to do multiple harddrives for multiple xboxes, you can use the same cd (==> use cd!!) all the times and lock all the drives with their own (unique) eeprom.bin file that you copy to the floppydrive. if you put the softmodded c drive on the cd, you can use this cd to rebuild and xbox directly into a softmodded state (but you need the eeprom.bin in ALL cases!!). if you look in C4RN1 (member)'s signature, you can find a c cheater file (this is an already softmodded xbox avalaunch c drive). (rebuilding the e drive is optional, you can ftp files into there later off course ==> see tutorial). as soon as you get the eeprom.bin from the 2 hotswapping failed xboxs, than you can rebuild their harddrives with the same disk. you only need to lock it with their respective eeprom.bin files but be sure to first get the eeprom.bin file of your xbox, or else you will not be able to lock the drive again. and like you already mentioned, if hotswapping fails you might end up with an error 5 (hard drive unlocked) and then need to build an eeprom reader (or build in a modchip). but above tutorial is very good, just make that disk one time. and (re)build your harddrives with the same disc over and over again.
That's a good point. I don't mind having a few cd's, each with their own eeprom.bin as there's not too many xboxes (so far) so only a few cd's and they act as backups, and i no longer use cd's for music so to me cd blanks are disposable. Also, i have very few old machines with decent floppy drives, but you do have a good point there.
Sorry creaky for the delay in getting back to you. Right,here is my problem.I have both eeprom bin files that I created. I didn't have them backed up on to my p.c. I have just got an eeprom reader which enabled me to read from both motherboards.I have saved them onto mt p.c desktop.My next part was to get original dashboard files c and put in the linux c folder.I then did the same with E. I created 2 folders 1 UDATA and 1 TDATA. The eeprom files that I got and saved I then put the relevant one into the eeprom folder in linux.What has got me completely stuffed is the live info program.When you go into it and you click on load eeprom,I click on the place where I had saved it to and its not visible.any ideas?I am assuming that in some of the other threads you can save these details as a bin file,and put that file in your linux eeprom instead of just the eeprom from the motherboard,as your recovery disc needs your unique hdd key.
I've never used an eeprom reader but i've read that you're supposed to save the eeprom as eeprom.bin in the eeprom program itself, but i don't know if renaming the file after the fact will work or not. Either way the file needs to be called eeprom.bin - maybe you should check this via XP's command prompt, i.e. double check that the file isn't just named 'eeprom'.
I think I have nearly cracked it.You need the hdd id key to go on with the eeprom bin file.You use live info with the power still connected to the hardrive via the xbox What I can't get now is to lock the hdd by floppy in the linux recovery disc.I have read so many threads on this and no one I have seen on the net able to go into proper detail how to lock the drive.The other thing is I don't have a floppy drive.
The other thing is I have actually used the linux programme on a hardrive and checked what happened in a modded xbox I know it sounds a bit silly,but hey i'm only learning how to use it.anyway it restored the hd to ms dash,but like I say its the locking problem I can't get my head around.
It's been a while so i can't remember exactly but i have a feeling i don't always bother with checking the eeprom info in the Liveinfo program.. i usually just copy the eeprom.bin into the relevant folder in the xboxhdm directory structure and try the drive unlocking/locking step.
how do you lock it back to the xbox that has the error on it.can I keep the hardrive powered up and hook it up to a modded xbox,and lock it with slayers 2.7 or will that not work?The linux 1.9 I am using mentions a floppy drive which I have'nt got.My other idea is to use the same sought of idea but use config magic.What is the best solution to lock it?
If you put the eeprom.bin on the cd in the eeprom folder it will load the eeprom.bin automatically. also put the file in different places on the cd, you can also manually point to the path if the eeprom folder isn't read. for me, the eepron.bin file wasn't read from the eeprom folder, that was why i used a floppy drive. but you can always put a few copies of the file elsewhere on the cd. you can also put the file on another cd and just put in the path manually
That is what I had done but on the linux disc it asks in the options menu something about using a floppy to lock the drive,but I don't have a floppy drive so can I originally power the hdd up from the xbox and when you build from scratch,can I lock it with slayers 2.7?
if you have the eeprom.bin file than you can use the hdm tutorial to (re)build a hard drive. you can lock the hard drive with the eeprom.bin file, no hdd key needed (the program extracts it from the eeprom.bin file). this will work with both softmodded and hardmodded xboxes. you can also do the hotswap trick to what you refer. disconnect the ide hd cable of the xbox's hard drive after it is unlocked, rebuild the c and e drive with the hdm tutorial and reconnect the ide cable back to the xbox en power down. for me this never worked though! this will also work for both softmodded and hardmodded drives. if you have a chipped xbox, then you can boot any slayer disk to get the eeprom.bin file (this is an option on the cd). furthermore, you can also format, prepare and use any (unlocked)hard drive if you have a modchip in it. in those cases you don't even have to lock the hard drive, a modchip would also boot an unlocked hard drive. of course with a slayers disk you can lock the hard drive to your xbox's eeprom. so, if you have a chipped xbox it is much easier. you can put any (unlocked!) hd in the box, put the slayer disc in and boot the slayer disc. use the disc to (re)build the hard drive and lock it (or leave it unlocked if you always boot from the chip. if it is chipped, you don't have to lock the hd with the eeprom.bin file, a chipped box will also boot an unlocked hd!!)so if you are able to boot a slayer disc from boot up, just prepare the hard drive with the slayer disc. no need to use the hdm tutorial, just put the slayer disc in your xbox and boot that up. then you're fine. if you do the hot swap trick, you do not need the slayers disc. but if you are able to boot the slayers disc, then you do not need to do the hot swap trick! so if chipped, slayers disc. not chipped, do the hotswap trick if the hdm tutorial doesn't work for you btw. you cannot unlock any xbox drives with the use of the slayer disc, you can only unlock xbox hd's that are locked to the eeprom of the xbox that the drive is in! so if i put my hd in your xbox, and you would boot the slayers disc, you will not be able to unlock the hard drive. since the slayers disc will try to unlock my harddrive that is in your xbox based on your eeprom's xbox. this will not work, since my hd is locked on my xbox's eeprom!!!
Right what I have basically got in front of me!!! eeprom read off a xbox that I soft modded and went wrong because I accidentally unlocked the drive,but can be accessed with explorer 360. another computer because my one f----d up,but with what looks like sata drives dvd,and hdd. 1 modded x box with slayers 2.7 on it xbox hdm 1 f----d up x box,the one that I got the eeprom off (showing up error 06) can I also just say that the hdd says unlocked but frozen in live info. the other thing I have just realiosed is that a 32 inch lcd telly for linux is no goog because the p.c boots up and you miss the first menu from 1 to 4,that is what me so confused when everyone else was saying how to lock the drive through linux backup. the other thing that doesn't make sense is this is a newc p.c and when I put linux disc in it starts up with the menus and when you tap in xboxhd it says there isn't a linux disc in. my marriqage is on the rocks here,i've been trying to do this for 3 weeks and my wife has said she is gonna throw me and the xboxs out of the window. please help mev before she calls the men with the white coats!!!!

I have used the eeprom reader to get an eeprom file off a non working xbox.Then what I have done is ftp the eeprom file over to the modded xbox and replace the eeprom file in the dashboard/backup. I hope I am doing this correctly.the thing is my hard drive in live info is showing unlocked but frozen.my theory is now I have the modded xbox with the normal xboxs eeprom I can lock the drive with the modded xbox using config magic.Ahh,but do I put the bin file that you load into the modded xbox as the bin file you load when you connect your xbox drive to pc with live info,or do I just use the eeprom file that I read off the dead xbox?
