i made some japanese subs and when i try to play them with vlc all i see is boxs how can i fix this i'm using aegisub to make my subtitles
You might need to add the Japanese font into the mkv. Your computer likely doesn't have Japanese text support, so you'll have to manually throw the font styles into the mkv to allow it to read the style from itself. Maybe. I'm about 5% sure of that statement.

Well, from what I know, you have to actually put the font into the MKV CONTAINER, not your computer. I can't seem to find anything that explains how to go about that, though. OR I just realized that maybe your filters aren't up to date. Have you gotten the latest vsfilter and/or Haali Media Splitter packages? That MIGHT be the issue. You could, but I don't think any other one is quite as versatile as .ass subs are (.ssa are close, but still inferior, for obvious reasons). And it still won't solve your Japanese characters issue. Let's see... I have no idea how fonts work (what extension they use and stuff), but... here's what I'm thinking you can do: If you're using an .mkv container (I just realized that you might not have been), then you'll need to get mkvmerge. If you've already got that, then you can try attaching the font file in .ttf format. Go to mkvmerge GUI, click on the Attachments tab, and find your .ttf file. On the "Attachment options", choose the following options: Description - Whatever you want MIME type - application/octet-stream Attachment style - ...I'm not sure; "To all files" seems fine. Mux everything together, and the resulting file SHOULD have the right fonts. ...maybe. I dunno, I'm grasping at straws here. I don't think it has anything to do with your computer, though. That much is pretty clear.
Well, what are you doing, then? Try to be as specific as you can. Include stuff like file extensions and anything you think will be useful information.
You can if you want. What I'm most interested in is the process you're going through. Like what you're putting the subtitle file into (an .avi movie, an .mp4 container, an .mkv container, etc.), what font you're using, stuff like that.
mkv so i dont have to compress anything it the audio is wav then i use flac the video is demux from vob so the video file is m2v and audio is ac3 my os is windows vista and right now its very unstable, do i have to use kanji timing if i have to use that to make it work i cant program crashes when i save it subtitle http://mybloop.com/go/LYYzkk
