I've recently added subtitles for a downloaded film using downloaded subs using SubTitle workshop. They seem to be OK cos when I clk on to the next sub (although not shown on the screen) it jumps OK. I am newbie to this sort of thing. Pl help. How can I save the subs with the film?
Do you mean save it INTO the film, so that it's always on? Or do you mean save into something WITH the film, so that you can turn it on and off? Additionally, what subtitle and video format are you using? (.srt, .sub, .ssa, etc. for subtitle -- .avi, .mp4, .mkv, etc. for video)
Thanks for your help. I mean to save it so that it can be turned on and off like commercial DVD's. Video file is .avi and audio .srt.
If you want to just play the avi on your computer, then all you have to do is name the subtitle the same name as your movie (if "movie.avi," then "movie.srt") and put it in the same folder as your movie (if "C:/movie.avi," then "C:/movie.srt"). If you're planning on burning it onto a DVD or so, though, you'll have to use conversion/burning programs such as ConvertXtoDVD or Avi2DVD... or something along those lines. Each should have an option for subtitles, and for those subtitles, you'd just navigate to your .srt file and select it.
Tks KajNrig for your help. But be patient with me since all this is new to me: I have used DVD Flick in the past to burn a downloaded film on to DVD but without subtitles. Can I use this again and if yes how would I know that the subs are OK if they are not showing on the PC? In fact only the first line of the subs is shown.
I've never used DVD Flick, so I don't know anything about that. But you could check your original .avi and see if the subs will play with that. Open up VLC Media Player (or Media Player Classic) and open your video file. If the subs don't automatically load, then (in VLC, anyway) manually go and open your subtitle. Once you've got the subtitles, see if they still work with the AVI or not. If they do, then I'd suggest you try re-authoring the DVD with ConvertXtoDVD or something besides DVD Flick. If they don't, then there might be something wrong with the timing of the subtitles. I dunno.
They're showing now. The hitch was that the audio file although loaded in SubTitle Workshop wasn't an .srt. Downloaded another one now OK. Back to my previous question: How am I going to burn the whole package with the subs which can be turned on or off?
Oh, okay. Actually, you could've just used Subtitle Workshop to save the subtitles you already had in .srt format. But it's all good now; you've got the correct subtitles. First of all, do they work okay? When you play the .avi, do they show up? ...do they show up all the way through? If so, then you can use any DVD authoring software, like FAVC mentioned above, or ConvertXtoDVD, or Avi2DVD, or some other programs. You might want to check out the Downloads section here for some more help. In the programs, just make sure you go to wherever the Subtitle section is and insert your subtitle file.
Thanks guys for your help but what I would like to make sure could the burnt subs be turned off on the final DVD. On FAVC there is a "hard" box to be checked in the subs dialogue. What does this do?
I can't be certain - you might want to PM dialysis1 - but if it says "Hard" it might mean "hardcoding," in which you wouldn't be able to turn the subs on and off.

Hi guys, Success at last. I burned a DVD complete with subs which can be switched on and off. Thanks to all of you who offered their help AND special thanks also to the programmers of the software. One little hitch is one player worked perfectly whilst another one refused to. It showed "Loading" and nothing else. Thanks again to ALL.
