I've had my softmodded xbox for a while now and I've done all of the mods to it myself. Whenever I used to press the eject button, it would boot into UnleashX. If I pressed the power button, I would boot into XBMC. Some time ago, this did not happen, instead I would get an xbox error message saying a fatal error has occured whenever the eject button was pressed.

I did this softmod with the Mechassault Linux method. Does anyone know of a fix to this?

    Thanks in advance

I got the same thing... and I was trying to use a stock xbox dash instead of UnleashX. Oddly enough, this happend to me while also using XBMC.

From what I was told (from when it happend to me), you got what they call a "Linux Virus"... lemme goes, you can't write to your C drive and that error you get is an error 21.

From what I been told, the only ways to fix it is to revert back to a stock state, and re-mod. Either that, or swap for another hard drive and see if it happens again.

However, because I am not the only one that got this using XBMC, I am inclined to believe that XBMC causes corruption to your C drive, and forces the Xbox to become dependant on XBMC.

    I could be wrong though.

First of all jdids you should always have a backup incase anything was to go wrong. That's why you never delete any of your exploits so you have a backdoor incase something were to disable your default dash. More than likely you moved something around or something updated causing a change in the location for one or more of your files. Now when you hit the eject button it finds the right default.xbe file but it can't launch the problem due to missing files.

    And you are...

Well for the most part i don't know about the so called "linux virus" i've been softmodded since 2002(cd exploit), with an update in 2004(nk patcher) and so far no problems what so ever with corruption or anything of the sort.

I know that a "linux virus" will corrupt partitions and then you have to nuke the hard drive and reformat, repartition, rebuild, and relock it.

More than likely these are MBR viruses and won't be wiped out just by reformatting and repartitioning. I'm thinking that a lot of people network their pc to xbmc to play music, videos, and view pictures. So if there was a virus on your pc in one of your network directory's, it could easily infect your xbox.

I know that even windows viruses can infect different operating systems, i've had to fix cell phones that were infected with viruses.

So just so you know, it's not xbmc trying to take over, it's probably just a virus on a networked drive.

I've never moved any files around in my C drive. My files are backed up and if I need an emergency FTP, I use XBMC with Y + White buttons at the start up to re-apply a backup. All of my recent backups have this problem.

I used an XBMC shortcut maker when I installed XBMC. Even after I used this, I could still access unleashx from an eject. Could I replace a default.xbe to get back that feature?

If yes, could you tell me exactly where I would need to reapply?

Why don't you replace all of your system files with your backed up files? I would guess it's everything in C folder and some system files in E. Unless you linked to the default.xbe in your E/apps/xbmc folder. Just replace them and it should work. There are no hidden files a softmod is just a file with the right name directing to the next file...and so on.

Let me know how it goes after you restore your backup files.

Like I stated earlier, all of my recent backups have this "Error 21" problem. I do not have any other C drive backups available. What I do have, though, is some C drive files from Ndure, but I believe that these files are for the original dash to boot when eject is pressed.

I was thinking about this over the weekend...

I modded my roommates xbox exactly the same way I modded mine. Could I copy his entire C drive over to mine to fix this?

Let me know what you guys think. I would think there would be absolutely no problem doing so, but before I do this I figured I would ask.

if they're both 1.0 to 1.5 version xbox's then yes. If yours is a 1.6 and he has a 1.4 you will get an error 21 when you boot your xbox.

I ended up reinstalling the softmod via linux game save. I think I did delete the game save in the first place.
