Help me build a ~$650 P.C

I have been searching around a few days and came up with a good PC for ~850 http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=5497649, but my parents just told me I have t limit to something near 600-650, I already have Vista Ultimate 64 and a Monitor, but I don't know what parts to get for a good cheap, and long lasting P.C that plays the latest games(Far Cry2,GTA IV,Crysis, etc) and will continue to do so. So my question is"Please build me a P.C for around 650". Sorry If I'm asking too much

 

Fortunately PC parts are much cheaper these days, so you can get a reasonable system for that much, especially if you already have the peripherals.

Could I go with the q6600 somehow, as I want to overclock it to about 3.6

 

That's not going to be possible. Newer Q6600s don't overclock as well as the old ones used to, 3.4 is about as high as you can get on a realistic voltage. The CPU is 70 dollars of those savings, so if you can squeeze $740 out of your parents as an initial payment, go for it, but that isn't really 'something near 600-650'

 

How about this? Is this the best I can get w/out going over 700?

I'm not happy with that power supply or hard drive, both for reliability reasons. Those look like the only changes you've made, and they're not good ones. You could get a smaller hard drive to save a few more dollars, but don't buy a Hitachi, stick with WD, Seagate or Samsung, and always buy solid, proven power supplies. The PSU I've chosen is actually cheaper, though on reflection I think this would probably be the best unit:

Hmm, I'm not particularly confident of that Power supply either. It should work, but I can't say how long it will last.

 

What Power Supply(Cheap and good) do you suggest then?(Maybe Combo with something)

For an extra $15, I would get the EP45-UD3P. It would be easier to make an upgrade to your PC later on. It has 2 PCI Express slots vs 1, so you can add a 2nd 4850 and have crossfire. Crossfire increases performance on games by as much as 60% from what I have seen.

A common mistake. People with burnt out wrecks of systems often regret that choice later on. "But I wanted a faster processor" - and look where it got them, broken motherboard, RAM and Graphics card, along with dozens if not hundreds of gigabytes of lost data when their hard disk got zapped.

I think the total price of your system is a little less than 637 though as the figures don't make sense, cause I was expecting my suggestions to be about $20 more...

Edit: That is about it at that price range.

As for a total build, the best I was able to muster was Shipping of $27. The total price was $834 + $27 shipping (of course that is for my zip code). Then there were $120 in rebates bringing the grand total to $715.

Your build would be, $728 + $41 shipping. There are $120 of rebates so it looks like yours would be $649 after shipping. Looks like it pays to pay for shipping??? Double check your final shopping cart, cause your wish list is not working for me any more because the power supply is no longer in stock....

It looks like this is all you need. Do you need some type of wireless internet connection? There is a PCI card with wired antenna for $11 including shipping. Other than that, I can't think of anything else. Maybe some case fans? Get those from a local shop though to avoid shipping.

Maybe also the Arctic Silver. You are paying $7 shipping on Arctic silver, so total price is $12. Odds are you can find it cheaper at a PC store. You will not use the whole tube, so try and find a smaller tube locally.

Also, if something you are buying is not on sale, you can hold off for a day and see if tomorrow there will be a new sale. If you cannot get the PSU you originally wanted (it was out of stock last I checked) go for the PC Power & Cooling one I linked to before. It is $40 after rebates.

Also, if that hurts the budget, go for the RAM I linked to as well. The G.Skill might be faster, but it is up to you. The Corsair is $30 cheaper. Let me know, and I will give you the promotion code for $5 off the Corsair.
