hello, i hope this wasn't asked already. if so please delete this message and let me know where i can find the topic at hand. anyway i wanted to know is a blu-ray mkv in 1080p quality converted to a mp4 file to stream on xbox 360 - the picture quality on that is that a true replica of what it would look like on the actual blu-ray disc? I have a 1080p Samsung 46" HDTV. i don't have a blu-ray player right now. but i plan on getting a PS3 as soon as possible. can someone give me a accurate answer to my question? just curious to know. thanks!
Blu-Ray and Mp4 utilize the same video lossy encoding (compression) called AVC (Advanced Video Compression), H.264 or more specifically MPEG4 part 10. Blu-Ray has a giant storage capability and is of course a removable disc media in a specific file structure. Mp4 is a stand alone portable file. What differentiates each further is that Blu-Ray would be expected to be of a very high bitrate to assist in the delivery of near uncompressed original quality. The typical protable file would ideally be smaller thus a lower bit rate. Audio has another thing altogether.
BTW if you are streaming to Xbox you should look at what the Xbox natively supports. Does it support mp4? Otherwise the product streaming will transcode. Good luck with your work and post you progress/solution please.
