    A fake Windows Security Shield icon is appearing in my taskbar and giving the message "You have a security problem!". There are also windows that pop-up asking me to scan the system and download some anti-virus programs, but I know that's part of the virus. I don't know where my family picked up the virus/malware, but I'm having the hardest time removing it. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

    I followed the instructions in the "*** IMPORTANT *** - Must read before posting!" sticky thread.
    I didn't clean with ATF Cleaner because I am running Vista.
    I ran Kapsersky WebScanner, and the log is posted below.
    I also ran HijackThis, and the log is posted below.

    Hi Joelle,

    Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

    Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- Don't forget this.
    • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

    • Please post the MBAM Log and a fresh HJT log in your next reply.

    Taken from Symantec

    Trojan.Fakeavalert.B - Removal

    See Link below:

    http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2008-102416-5319-99&tabid=3

    Discovered: October 24, 2008
    Updated: October 29, 2008 9:40:39 PM
    Also Known As: Troj/Renos-BX [Sophos]
    Type: Trojan
    Infection Length: Varies
    Systems Affected: Windows 2000, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows XP

    Once executed, the Trojan drops the following files:

    %System%\msxml71.dll
    %System%\[RANDOM FILE NAME].exe

    The Trojan creates the following registry entry, so that it runs every time Windows starts:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\"MSFox" = "%Temp%\a.exe"

    It then registers itself as a Browser Helper Object (BHO) by creating the following registry subkeys so that it runs every time that Internet Explorer is launched:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{500BCA15-57A7-4eaf-8143-8C619470B13D}
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib\{9233C3C0-1472-4091-A505-5580A23BB4AC}
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\XML
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\XML.XML
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\XML.XML.1
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\MSFox
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{500BCA15-57A7-4EAF-8143-8C619470B13D}
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{500BCA15-57A7-4eaf-8143-8C619470B13D}

    It then modifies the following registry entries:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\"DisableScriptDebuggerIE" = "yes"
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\"Error Dlg Displayed On Every Error" = "no"

    The Trojan adds tasks in the Windows Task Scheduler to launch itself every hour of every day of the week.

    The Trojan then displays misleading security-related alert pop-ups that may give exaggerated reports about potential risks on the computer.

    The Trojan contacts the following remote location using the http request functionality to send and retrieve configuration information:
    [http://]208.72.168.114/cset.p[REMOVED]
    The Trojan then downloads and executes the following files, some of which may be an updated version of the Trojan:

    %Temp%\3NgdK02d.dat
    %Temp%\a.exe
    %Temp%\b.exe
    %Temp%\c.exe
    %Temp%\~tmpa.exe
    %Temp%\~tmpb.exe
    %Temp%\~tmpc.exe
    %Temp%\~tmpd.exe

    Go to Symantec Site - And follow REMOVAL tab instructions.

    @mwm757,

    It is better and much Safer to remove a Trojan or Malware using a tool like Malwarebytes’ AntiMalware than to advise someone, who may not know what they are doing, to poke around in the registry and run the chance of Borking their computer…

    I know how to modify the registry but those I help with malware removal may not…

    Old Guys know this. It saves a lot of re-format/ re-installs.[IMG]
