How do you tell what media your DVD drive uses

I have seen DVD+R and DVD-R I have some +R and during a burn attempt I as prompted to put in a media disc, when I put in the +R DVD it whirred around and then prompted me again. I have a compac lap top. On the dvd drive it says DVD ROM,CD rewrtable

 

Hi, your burner is

1) a dvd reader only (dvd-rom) does not burn dvds
2) a cd burner Including rw discs
