Hi, I've got videos d/loaded as AVI(Xvid) files that I burn to Verbatim DVD+R as data discs to view on TV. Trouble is I can only play or pause, if attempt fast forward/back the picture freezes and need to try stop/eject. In the past same thing with a friend's disc even caused machine to crash (Samsung DVD-HR 734(A)), had to switch off at wall socket to recover. I know DVD structure (menu, chapters, etc) removed in AVI files but would like to f/fwd etc from disc, similar to PC or mobile devices(as MP4). In a naive attempt I tried converting with Super to DVD and TS formats(TS error reported but files output), but Ashampoo burner says not valid DVD files for either(?). Is there a workaround for this? Or do I need a new DVD recorder?! Current video apps on system are DVDFab, AutoGK, DVDShrink, FixVTS, Super, Avidemux, Ashampoo Burning Studio 8. Thanks.
It was just a guess. Does it happen with all the AVI files that you try to play? Sometimes I have the same problem if i attempt to play one on my computer, and the file is somehow corrupt/ damaged.
Every DVD+R I've burned from d/loaded AVI files has same problem in DVD player. Picture quality etc is excellent. If the cause is missing keyframes in source file as suggested in the link you kindly provided, not sure what can do about it, bit of a novice here. Finding bits n' pieces such as these: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=667848 http://forum.digital-digest.com/archive/index.php/t-46927.html Will see if can recreate problem on another player (ie. not Samsung) just to rule out anyway.
Okay then... Regarding inability to FF/RW AVI files. Tried AVI discs in couple friend's players but as older players discs didn't play at all, so still no further forward in determining if player problem. Installed DVD Flick, converted, and burned Video TS with ImgBurn, but player just ejected disc. Tried to burn with Ashampoo but ImgBurn must have screwed my Ashampoo burner, disc stuck, system crashed, had to force shutdown. Grr... Uninstalled DVD Flick (incl. registry file left by ImgBurn), and just burned AVI file to watch, thankfully Ashampoo working again. I've now reinstalled DVD Flick, converted a second AVI film, and decided to burn first with Ashampoo which found disc and burned perfectly as usual. Movies look great in DVD format on TV, and as I'd inserted chapters I could skip around or fastforward/back. Woo hoo. Result. BUT d/loaded AVI movies approx 700MB, whereas Video TS movies over 4GB (full file folders twice that). Suddenly my 250GB external drive don't look so big. Still dunno if d/loaded AVI file formats actually capable of FF/RW on disc at all, in which case I've been chasing my tail. But at least found workaround, if not perfect. Guess that's as far as I get now until I get a new digital DVD recorder with HDD and DivX playback. Unless anyone suggests different? Thanks for the input.
Yes, it is possible to FF/RW AVI files burned onto a disc. However, it does depend on the player and the way the AVI was created( maybe with QPEL, GMC, or something). It might work if you just change the header of the AVI; I have no problem FF/RW with the Pioneer Divx player that I use sometimes. You could try to re-pack the AVIs( no quality loss), or maybe re-encode them( you will lose some quality). Try either way, at least maybe you find an answer. If you want to re-pack them(will only take a couple of minutes): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/731218 To re-encode: http://www.ryan.com.br/virtualdub_en.htm
Loaded file into Avidemux which replaced index files, saved copy, burned, and well whaddayaknow...IT WORKED! Thanks again, cyprusrom, info from this site been a blessing recently, steep learning curve but getting there (I think). Until next time...(?!) Cheers.
