I am running Vista Home Basic x64. I have about twenty avi files on my hard drive and usually when I click on the icon, Windows Media Player will open up and play the file with no problem. But now, for some reason,when WMP starts playing the file, two flash player icons pop up in the system tray, one for audio and one for video. I'm pretty sure this is tied into Replay Media Catcher, which I had to reinstall yesterday. Before I did that I never had any icons come up. Also, though I'm not sure this matters, I did notice in "associations" that I have a reference to flv and the current default for that is FLV player.
Are those flash player icons or FFDShow icons? Is there a setting in RMC to capture automatically everything that you play on your PC( including through WMP maybe)?
cyprusrom Thanks for replying. Your right, they are FFDSHOW icons! So I would assume it's Replay Media Catcher that's causing the problem, right? Also, I checked in Replay Media Catcher under Tools, Settings and Media Catcher Plugins and these are checked: Capture Flash RTMP streams, Capture HTTP Media streams, Capture RTSP/MMS streams and Shoutcast Snagger. I would imagine unchecking "Capture HTTP Media streams" would help, correct? While were on the subject of capturing, I have to mention that the only reason I am running both Replay Media Catcher and Replay Video Capture is because I have not found anything better yet. But I hear Camtasia Studio is just as good, if not better and will do everything that both Replay Media Catcher and Video Catcher will do. What are your thoughts?
Honestly, i don't know much about media capture software. If I want a video, I download it using Firefox and the DownloadHelper plug-in, maybe a URL sniffer. Sorry cannot recommend much in that direction( also a couple of my converters-Tunebite(paid) and Any_Video_Converter(free) have the capability to capture video from different sites; it all depends what sites you're looking at. As for those two FFDShow icons- I though that's what they might be. You must have done some installing/uninstalling,some codecs or software. The reason why FFDShow comes up is because WMP cannot decode Divx/Xvid without having the codecs installed. In order to do that you either need the standalone codecs installed(Divx/Xvid), or let FFDShow do it. If you have Divx installed, and it bothers you to see those two icons, just go in settings and set FFDShow not to decode your Divx/Xvid videos.
Well so much for that theory! I just went ahead and uninstalled Replay Media Catcher, thinking that would solve the problem. It didn't! I opened up an avi movie, and when WMP started to play it, the FDDShow icons popped up again. Obviously something else is causing this, so at this point, I better go ahead and list what else, video-related that I have running. I have AVI Comp, which, as you know installs all kinds of other things, some of which I had installed already. I also have VirtualDubMod, AVISynth, VobSub and XVid along with Xilisoft Video Converter and Video Editor, Ulead DVD MovieFactory Pro 7 and Sony DVD Arhitect. The most recent program I have installed was Ulead DVD MovieFactory 7, which I installed after moving up from MovieFactory Plus 6, but I don't think that's the program that's causing the icons to pop up.
No, it was some program that you have installed and probably came with FFDShow. Don't know why it bothers you, but here's how to get rid of it: Go to Start->All Programs->FFDShow-> Video Decoder Configuration( if you have Vista is a bit different). You'll open a window like in the picture below. Click on "Tray, dialog & Paths". For "Tray Icons" check "None", click Apply; now go back and do the same for Audio Decoder Configuration , and those eye sore icons should be out of your sight when you play your videos
If you cannot find them in the start menu, just launch one of your AVI files and when the icons show up, just double click on them to get to the settings.

I think that statement needs to be revised. Even if you have them installed, if FFDShow is set-up to decode mpeg4(AVI/Divx/Xvid),I think it will still fire up when you launch a player that does not support those codecs natively. You can totally disable FFDShow, not just hide the icons, but I think it uses less resources on your PC than the standalone codecs, so I would let it take care of your AVIs.
Thanks cypresrom, That makes sense! But I'd still like to figure out how or with what program, FFDshow got installed. I mean I thought I got by ok without it before! I think I'm starting to get codec overload! Thanks for your help though!
I understand you when talking about codec overload! I doubt FFDShow will hurt though. I don't remember if it came with VirtualDub, and I don't use any of the other software that you have.
