I've been having some issues with my 3yr old dell laptop for some time now. It started roughly 6mths ago.

Basically it would run slow after being turned on for a while. I didn't have the time or the patience to try and trouble shoot as I was having hardware issues with my gaming pc at the time.

The laptop was loaded with ubuntu when the issues first started. Now it is running windows xp pro sp3 and the issue is as follows:

The physical memory available in task manager will gradually decrease, the pf usage will gradually increase. The only solution I've found as of now is restarting the computer every couple of hours. For those of you who have seen lost, this is similar to entering the code in the computer so the island doesn't explode.

Anyway, I cannot confirm that the same thing was happening with ubuntu running instead of windows (I thought it was just ubuntu being a resource hog with all the stuff I had running).

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Wes H.

You could open windows task manager processes tab to see which one is using up your cpu then disable it. I have had a similar issue with software for a Hp printer. Good luck hope this helps.

That's just the problem... No program showing in task manager is using up cpu/memory. It's got me stumped. I'm just going to reinstall windows and troubleshoot from there.

You should be able to restore your laptop back to the way it was when you got it. I know because i just did my gateway which is about 3yrs old just the other day. I wanted to clean out my system and it was starting to get slow. The way i had to do mine was hit f11 during the boot sequence and use my restore disk. I had a choice to do a total restore and loose all files or another type. If loosing your files isn't important to you this is the way i would do it or i should say i did it. good luck.
