Hi there Had a nightmare 2 nights ago daughter knocked glass of beer over me laptop it wasn't loads as most went onto carpet(another problem) It mainly fell around keyboard region! First thing i done was pull out plug and turn up side down. By the time i wen to shut it down it had just died. Only had battery light ullimainated. Disconnected battery took out hard drive, memory, dvd drive and then keyboard after quickly finding out how on the net via desktop. Noticed small wet patch sitting where ribbon type of cable sits. Only thing is the cable that comes out of laptop is like a thin green plastic with numerous thin strips of copper in it which then pushes into the main computer rather like a ribbon cale. I have left my laptop to dry out for the last 36hrs etc and then decided to put it all back together again. Put all back this morning and it now boots up,only prob is screen not coming on plus keyboard doesn't seem to do nothing. Maybe that's stopping the screen coming on. Even if i press caps lock the light doesn't come on. The laptop is a SonyVaio PCG GRT-895MP which is 5-6 years old but is a good laptop which is solely used for surfing the net. I know the laptop isn't worth much but was just for some advice on what to do or try! Have searched the net for spares and they are hard to come by. Many thanks
I read an article a while back from a guy that works at AMD in regards to spilling water, beer, soda, or any other liquids on laptops...He talked about taking the laptop apart as quickly as possible and drenching it with Denatured alcohol and letting it sit for a min or two. Then you repeat the process 2 or 3 more times then let the laptop dry for two hours.. You must make sure it's Denatured alcohol or it will eat the protective coating on the motherboard and destroy it.. Denatured alcohol is pricey, it's about 10-15 dollars a bottle at Walmart or HomeDepot.. That's the only thing i suggest trying, sorry i can't give you any more info...
Pure Amonia also work in place of Denatured alcohol, make sure it's pure though and that it doesn't have any cleaning agents...
De-natured simply means made poison so you cant drink it for ETHYL alcohol, methylated spirits are petroleum based. Traditionally, the main additive was 10% methanol, which gave rise to methylated spirits, it's basically the same from the information i gathered..
Thought i would write this down as i read this on another site. Read on a site somewhere that i should submerge in meths for a couple of hours so i let just the bottom of the laptop sit in it. I first took the fans out, hard drive, memory, battery, speakers etc. Basically anything that would get ruined by the liquid. Made sure screen was well clear of meths(liquid). After a while i gently scrubbed components in laptop with a toothbrush to get rid of the sugary residue left on the circuit boards etc. Remembering not to press too hard as you can damage on board components. Then took it out and dried surplus liquid off with soft paper towels(or something similar). I then left to dry for at least 48hrs naturally(DO NOT USE HAIRDRIER-can cause more damage being too hot) The keyboard i also submerged in the meths for a couple of hours and then slightly brushed also with toothbrush. Then dried with paper towels and then let it dry also for 48hrs. I finally put it all back together today and powered up. Windows booted up as normal and everything seemed to be fine until i started pressing some of the keys. Some of the keys wouldn't work properly. I am thinking of taking out keyboard once more as it is very easy with this laptop(2 screws) and given it a proper clean with meths, toothbrush etc. Does anyone think its worth it or should i try buying a new keyboard! Many thanks for any help given.
Try giving the keyboard a good cleaning and if that doesn't work buy another keyboard, it's good to hear that the laptop powered up and all the other components seem to be functioning properly, that's good news..
Latest update is tried cleaning keyboard again. But this seems to have made it worse. Think keyboard is knackered. Plugged in usb keyboard then tried booting up laptop. Everything started fine hard drive, fans etc but had black screen. Now thinking screens died! Had to just push the power button to shut down windows. Connected up spare monitor. booted up windows now loaded fine. Then after say 3 mins just clicking around windows screen started to pixalate like watching a very bad movie copy! Decided to reboot again this time couldn't make out what was on screen all blocky squares everywhere! Had to power off and reboot, this time loaded fine but still had problem with screen picture quality after say 5-10 mins this time. Could this be a problem with the video card or does it sound like the laptop had died? Any ideas on what to try before i bin it?
I have nothing to offer regarding a solution, just sharing my tale of woe, which turned out well, to see if lightens the mood (if this had been my new netbook i wouldn't be amused though). Spilt half a cup of boiling tea over a laptop 2 nights ago. It went over a large area of the keyboard, trickled down inside thru to the 2 batteries too. Unsurprisingly, various keys stopped working, then the laptop went crazy, it was like loads of random invisible fingers were typing. Switched off, dried off/out as much as possible, then gave it another try. Unsurprisingly, the power brick light wouldn't come on, more wierd behaviour from invsible fingers and various keys wouldn't work. Lots of annoying loud beeps from the speaker too. Shutdown and resigned myself that it had gone to meet it's maker. For a laugh, left the laptop overnight, stood it on up on edge, the wet edge being lowest to allow some of the remaining liquid to drain out. The next morning i fired it up, amazingly all the keys worked, and it charged/held charge, and another day later it's still working fine (no beeps or wierd behaviour either). I'll never trust leaving it powered on unattended in the future, but luckily this (old) laptop lives on to fight another day and show that it enjoys tea
Sorry, meant to comment earlier; glad you tried a usb keyboard, i was going to do that if my keyboard stayed broken. It sounds like the video could be knackered, i don't know much about Sony laptops so don't know if the video is onboard or removable (not sure if any laptops have removable video though).
Creaky, i'm pretty sure all laptops have removable video... its just a matter if your supposed to remove it or not i wonder if rubbing alcohol would work too? or is that a totally different thing?
I Threw up on my laptop two nights ago cause i drank too much beer and it just turned off and i dont know what to do tried cleaning it and the laptop lights turn on without me turnin them on and i dont even hear the hdd powerin up or anything else is my laptop in computer heaven or did i just nont clean something right please help
