Either author a proper dvd with a program that has subtitle
    capabilities, http://dvdflick.net/features.php
or, if your player accepts xvid/divx directly, you can
generally do one of three things.
    1) Put a subtitle SRT file in the folder with the same name as
the movie. For example, mymovie.avi and mymovie.srt

    2) mux the subtitles into the avi to create a file with the divx
suffix. This gives switchable subs. Divx Mux Gui can do this
    also Sub2Divx - http://userxp.tripod.com/

3)re-encode the avi file using Virtuldub with the textsub filter
(from Gabest Vobsub) or Virtualdubs built in filter "subtitler"
which reads sub station alpha subs. This gives burned in subs.
