Can I shrink songs in itunes?

I just bought my son an ipod shuffle (1 gig). After 35 songs itunes says that the shuffle is full. The songs are from cds. Do I have to shrink the tunes down? Can I do that in itunes? I have looked under prefrences-advanced but find nothing about importing. ANy suggestions? Thanks.
