Currently Have a 360 but want to get into PS3 and have some money from Christmas and want to get a PS3. I currently play HD WMV from a external HDD formatted in HTFS on my 360. Does PS3 support NTFS (So that I wont have to convert my external HDD from NTFS to HTFS)? What formats will I be able to play from an external HDD on my PS3. AVCHD? MKV? Bluray? Let me know and any additional information would be helpful. I really dont want to stream from my pc Im mainly wanting to know what I can do from an external HDD.

PS3 only supports FAT32, however you can fit m2ts files larger than 4GB on it's own internal proprietary HDD, m2ts supports 1920x1080p content, AC3 5.1 and uncompressed LPCM 7.1 surround sound... provided your receiver supports these codecs too.

On the FAT32 drive you can author AVCHD content from Blu-ray or HDDVD content using a variety of apps that are freeware.

If you intend on using your potential PS3 as a media machine you cannot go wrong.

So PS3's do not support Ipods? If they do then it PS3 should support HTFS which is the Ipod formatting system.

Is it a pain to convert to the m2ts I know there are tutorials but in your opinion is it a hassle?

So if i have an external HDD i can use play content in the form of AVCHD?

The main reason i was straying away from streaming is it really seems like a pain to get everything set up and running and slows the network down I would imagine. Im constantly using bandwidth for downloading so I dont know how good it would work.

I currrently use WMVHD as i said earlier on my 360 which is fine but most have hard coded subtitles and they do not seem true 1080. I am getting picky and as AVCHD and MKV are becoming more popular they are easier to get a hold of the WMVHD so i was going to get a PS3 because I thought I could play them off an external HDD. If not I would be better off just building a media center with 400 bucks and playing bluray movies right off a hard drive ?

Really, it's not that much of a hassle to set everything up. I don't mind doing all of these things for Blu-ray/HDDVD quality content.
