Correct me if I post at wrong place. I have Samsung BDP1500, connected to my onkyo HTS5100 system. HTS5100 has 3 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output. BD player use HDMI input1, XBOX360 use HDMI2. HDMI ouput connect to LCD TV. My question is for audio: I can only use optical for both? otherwise sound can only from TV. is there a way using HDMI for audio but not optical? if that is true, what am gonna do in the future have another equipment need both audio and video output? checked AVS forum. should come back to BD player to set the aduio as PCM output. but realized the bass is not as good as optical, know why?
Although decent, you can't expect much from a $400 surround system. The HDMI ports are strictly pass-through in this price range. But it would appear the unit has two coaxial inputs and two optical inputs for a total of 4 digital audio inputs. Isn't that enough? The is my current set up and I like the quality of sound and the ease of set up. But my praise ends there. With the understanding that this unit has HDMI (plastered on the box and on the receiver), I was confident that I would be able to plug the Sony S-350 into the HDMI port and be able to enjoy the lossless format from Dolby. Regardless what the Circuit City sales guy had to say, this system is NOT capable of playing lossless formats. This was confirmed when I called Onkyo technical support. As an alternative, I thought that I could buy a Blu Ray deck that has analog outputs. I would then connect it to the analog inputs on the receiver. Though you would think that the lossless formats would work, Onkyo technical support insists that it will not produce what I am looking for. In sum, I suggest that those who are looking to migrate to Blu Ray should consider the HTS-6100 and be ready for the future. I would assume because your unit is not capable of lossless formats, if in fact the above review is accurate.
thanks for you post, now I understand better. seems like 2x Toslink plus 2 coaxial are the only options for the audio. How worse it compares to HDMI audio?
Don't be so negative, HDMI is better (lossless), but Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 ain't exactly garbage. Blu-Ray though, is supposed to support Dolby Digital 5.1 at 640 kbit/s as opposed to DVD's original 448 kbit/s. That's about a 40% increase.
